Bug Description

Buffalo WLI-UC-GNM2 which is USB WLAN adapter, is not recognized as wlan device (is not shown up by iwconfig).
  http://buffalo.jp/product/wireless-lan/client/wli-uc-gnm2/

Its USB device ID is "0411:01ee" and it uses Ralink chip, but exact chip name is unknown.
A prior model "WLI-UC-GNM" seemed to use Ralink RT3070.

If modprobe'ing rt2800usb and writing "0411 01ee" to /sys/bus/usb/drivers/rt2800usb/new_id makes it work, a kernel with CONFIG_RT2X00_DEBUG should provide additional information about the chip.

Note that current Oneiric kernels are built with
# CONFIG_RT2800USB_RT35XX is not set
# CONFIG_RT2800USB_RT53XX is not set
so there's some chips that the driver doesn't support yet.

$ sudo modprobe rt2800usb
$ echo '0411 01ee' | sudo tee /sys/bus/usb/drivers/rt2800usb/new_id

with the commands above, the device woks as wlan device and I can connect to network.

dmesg when plugged in the device is pasted below.

Nobuto MURATA, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

Hello,

I am another user of WLI-UC-GNM2, and trying to use it on linux.
Unfortunately, it is not working properly yet, and I can see the same symptom as Nobuto's comment #5.
As long as checking on my PC, the latest Ubuntu 12.04 kernel (3.2.0-24-generic) is still compiled without CONFIG_RT2800USB_RT35XX nor CONFIG_RT2800USB_RT53XX option that Julian mentioned above.

J.Son,
the chip is identified as RT3070, so those additional CONFIGs won't be necessary. Just send a patch upstream (similar to [0]) that adds the VID/PID to the driver.
