Bug Description

Problem:

This has never worked. The enablement team has narrowed down to an AMD driver issue, but AMD never fixed their proprietary driver.

Anthony mentioned in https://bugs.launchpad.net/certify-planning/+bug/1061210 that brightness keys are grey-list. Is this still the case?

Hi Jeff,

I'll raise this to AMD, but I don't think it's going to be a high priority since it is not cert blocker and it is not blocking shipment.

It is a blocker though, neither the keys or the settings control allow you to change the brightness settings appropriately.

There is an inconsistency, insofar that we never resolved the hardware private bug 979884, but we marked the same hardware certified on the pre-install image. I'll ask AMD to take a look.

AMD has fixed a similar issue on other platforms. This fix is different on each hardware, and ASIC. AMD may have to take a look at the actual hardware to fix it.

Jeff, are we able to ship the hardware to AMD so that they can fix the problem?

Jeff Marcom, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, please just make a comment to this.

If reproducible, could you also please test the latest upstream kernel available (not the daily folder) following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.13-rc6

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.

I have this problem on Ubuntu 15.04, my laptop is Lenovo Ideapad P500.
This is a fresh install.
I already tried several workaround from stack overflow, and none worked.

Thank you Christopher.
I was able to solve the problem by modifying some GRUB settings that I found in an Archlinux post; strangely, the others that I found in StackExchange properly for Ubuntu didn't do the job.

I wondered if you still recommend posting about it.
