Did this issue occur in a previous version of Ubuntu, or is this a new issue?

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.12 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

This is a bug with the linux-firmware package. By installing a newer linux-firmware package the bug is solved.

It solved both the wifi issues and the issue where it would not shut down.

Thanks for the update. 1.117 is the version of linux-firmware that is in Trusty.

Saucy has the 1.116 firmware version. Do you happen to know if the bug exists with 1.116 as well?

If you are using Ubuntu 12.04, you can add the pali PPA for the latest open source graphics drivers and linux-firmware.

sudo add-apt-repository -y ppa:pali/graphics-drivers; sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get dist-upgrade -y

Otherwise if you just want linux-firmware:

cd /tmp; wget http://launchpadlibrarian.net/161429534/linux-firmware_1.118_all.deb; sudo dpkg -i linux*.deb

Or you can upgrade to Ubuntu 13.10/14.04
