Was there a prior kernel version that did not have this issue?
I see that the vmwgfx driver is configured to be a module in the kernel config file: config.common.ubuntu:CONFIG_DRM_VMWGFX=m
Can you also attach your /var/log/syslog file?
One additional request, can you test the latest mainline kernel[0]?
