Bug Description

After successfully connecting to a wireless network, nm-applet displays the "disconnected" icon instead of the signal strength. The icon tooltip says "Wireless connection '...' active", which is correct. When I left-click the icon to see the list of networks, under "Wireless networks", there's just a "Disconnect" button, while the network I'm connected to is in the list along with all other available networks.

/var/log/syslog contains one suspicious message:

May 3 00:51:08 dima-macbook NetworkManager: <debug> [1272873068.221331] periodic_update(): Roamed from BSSID 00:26:5A:B3:F8:7B (dlink88226) to (none) ((none))

This Bug also affects me on my HP Mini 5101 (i386).
In Ubuntu 9.10 the icons of the nm-applet were correct. Since I've updated to Lucid this bug is bugging me.

denik, Rodrigo,

Does installing and using the STA driver as proposed in the Restricted drivers manager application (System -> Administration), display the correct connection status?

I'm aware that this is not ideal, but if it is the case it seems there is an issue with the b43/ssb driver, as already reported in other bugs i've seen.

I am using the STA driver, because this was the easiest way to get my WLAN running.

This affects me, too
Macbook 5,1 (Ubuntu 10.04 with STA driver)

I notice that this only happens when i connect to a 802.11n router.
If i connect to a 802.11g router, the connection status is correct.

I have the exact same setup as Rhys (Dell Mini 10v, STA driver, 802.11n Router - DLink DIR-615).

If anyone needs logs

On an upside, this is the only complaint I have with Lucid.

This affects me w/ STA driver connecting to an 802.11n router @ 5 GHz, but only on initial connection. If I disconnect and reconnect w/ the Network Manager applet, the correct icon (signal strength bars) is displayed.

Affects Mac Mini late 09 version. Using the Broadcom STA driver and as you may guess a 802.11n router. Havent tried using G only but im guessing thats the issue.

Yup, there has been changes upstream to workaround the Broadcom drivers giving out not quite the right information. This fix will be available in the next version of Ubuntu as well, Maverick Meerkat.

I have this applet problem. It is not my own machine so I *cannot* return it to my friend with a 'disconnected' icon, the person is very non tech and would freak out. They are using ubuntu because Windows scared them.

This was a show stopper for me until I found I could use the non proprietary b43 driver and not the broadcom STA, which gave me the problem.

Hello, I've been having the same problem with this version of the applet. I've found that mine only gives a misreading when I'm connected to a secure network. If I'm using an open network, the applet displays the correct amount of signal and everything.
