I have a dellE6410 with Nvidia 3100M, I just got it working doing the following :
1) Installed 10.04 with alternate media and no x
2) Use nouveau.modeset=0 on the GRUB boot command (if you have nvidia card graphics)
3) Upon booting into textmode install the working nvidia drivers
4) Modify /boot/grub/grub.conf to include nouveau.modeset=0 in the kernel commandline

I have the laptop working with X and wired network now.
