We're seeing the same problem here with linux-fsl-imx51 on Babbage and Lange. Seems like there is some weird stuff going on in the USB core these days... it worked fine in 2.6.28 for both boards, but the Karmic kernels are a blowout.

Update- the problem is being caused by my HP LaserJet 1018 printer. Printer was not cooperating during USB enumeration. Perhaps something was changed regarding the USB enumeration process for this release? Anyways, unplugging the printer fixes problem- no delay on boot anymore. I would suggest anyone else experiencing similar problems try unplugging all USB devices and rebooting- try booting with one device plugged in at a time (or watch kernel log while you plug/unplug devices) and try to see if there is a single culprit preventing timely USB enumeration.

I also hav a HP LaserJet 1018 and exactly the same error. (EasyPeasy Newest Version) When the USB-Printer is plugged in on boot I get these "usb 1-6: device descriptor read/64, error -110" / "usb 1-6: device descriptor read/8, error -110" errors. But the printer also does not work if i plug it in later, after the system has booted. Sometime deleting it helps to delete the printer driver and to replug it in, but since the last few days this workaround does not work anymore.

If it to helps to solve the problem I can attach the dmesg-Output.

I can confirm this is also happening on the latest mainline kernel 2.6.32-rc8.

For me, it is being triggered by an onboard wireless card which uses a usb interface.

I can report the same error on Karmic, with 2.6.31-16-generic-pae
and the CD/DVD no longer works under Ubuntu. Still working with the *other* OS.

But since I've upgraded to Karmic, the machine is now unstable, and there is always something not working well. And the boot process... it takes 2:30 minutes to boot on a Asus G70, with Duo T9500. I hope a more stable 10.4.

I also have an HP LaserJet 1018 and I have the same errors.
Kernel: 2.6.31-16-generic

The printer worked on Ubuntu since january 2008, with issues (often I had to reboot for the document to print, or to boot with the printer switched on). The situaton did not improve with Karmic (errors where more random).
Not the printer does not work at all. It looks like some kernel upgrade (-14 -15 -16, I don't know) changed something in USB.

I've been installing, installing again and again my printer (Laserjet 1018) after ubuntu updates.

I have also been seeing this on Karmic with my HPLJ 1020. lsusb is slow and printer not recognized. Cycling power on the printer brings it right back online ( with instant lsusb's). I also do not see this behaviour under windows. All the errors in my case are on bus 7. My printer is on bus 2.

i'm having a similar issue since i upgraded to karmic this afternoon. in my case the error is related to a western digital my book. i've used this same my book to back up and store data in several previous versions of ubuntu and never had any problems with it.

It's not just in Ubuntu. I experienced it on Fedora 12, Archlinux, Debian Lenny and Ubuntu. And surprisingly - I have one piece of HP 1018 laser printer on my desk too. Friend of mine confirmed it also on Ubuntu and Debian (with 1018 printer).

This [https://answers.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/4272] claims that removing the USB 2.0 module [modprobe -r ehci_hcd] will correct the condition, but this is clearly a suboptimal solution.

I can't be sure what caused the condition after a year plus of usage, but I can confirm that after multiple reboots and even a distribution upgrade, the problem persists.

If it's of help, my machine will properly mount an USB flash drive, but remains unable to properly handle two separate - and confirmed working - Seagate Free Agent 1TB USB drives.

Nor can I remove the ehci_hcd module any longer, since it's apparently now builtin. So short of compiling my own kernel, I'm unable to properly use these drives.

I downloaded the Debian Live CD. Burned it and booted. Now the errormessage was different. The bootup gave the error only in UsB 5-6. A difference with my Ubuntu Os.

I don't know if this difference is somehow significant. I hope it is helpful.

Looks similar to Bug #54273, in that bug rmmod ehci_hcd seems to fix the issues or at least work around it. Linux USB FAQ lists some of the reasons why you are seeing this issue.

@Manoj, the supposed "workaround" (which has been working around for 2-3 years now) was:
modprobe -r ehci_hcd
(Which resulted in terrible USB 1.1 speeds, but at least allowed people to read their data.)

I could be wrong, but I believe this command (above) gives an error in Lucid: module not found. I was under the impression that this error was due to the (relatively) recent decision to integrate "ehci_hcd" in the kernel itself -- ie, there's no *external*/modular/dkms file to disable or remove at runtime.

I'm currently running a Dell Latitude E6500, AMD64 Lucid 10.04* and I have only just started seeing this error (when reading from two known-good external USB hard disks) *after* the upgrade from Karmic --> Lucid. (Not saying that the upgrade is responsible; just trying to provide a timeline just-in-case.) Suffice it to say, this problem is NOT going away, and (if bug-reports are any measure) it's affecting a not-at-all-insignificant number of users.

Would love a fix, naturally -- but in the meantime, is there a practical (quick) way to perform the "modprobe -r ehci_hcd trick" (or something similar) on as a workaround with modern/Lucid kernels?

FWIW, I only see this with LaCie external drives, over USB. From tragic experience, I know the USB connections on those drives to be prone to failure, often leaving only the FireWire ports functional. For some reason, the same drives still work on Macs.

So, could be buggy USB devices and/or bad cables, but clearly something could be done to make Linux more forgiving, since Windows can connect to such drives on the same machine (per reports of others, haven't tried myself).

Hello, do not know if this helps but I have a 4 GB usb pen drive that is (apparently) randomly not recognized when connected to an high speed port while it works fine when connected to an usb hub working at low speed (tryed also with another pen drive of same brand and one of different brand with same behavior).

Guess the issue may be in ehci_hcd

I just noticed this 'regression?' on a 32-bit system running the prior 2.6.32.23 [meaning, I observed 'whups, it's broken again' on a machine that had been running that kernel for days or weeks] and an update to 2.6.32.24.25 did not immediately resolve it. The majority of USB devices, including the one I was trying to use [HP OfficeJet v40, scanner component via scanimage backend in gscan2pdf] are connected to the ports on the system's SB600 southbridge. Using the 'unbind' trick detailed above for the EHCI controller did not help.

This configuration must have been working at some point, or we would have noticed earlier. I was at a loss after a few reboots until I tried a fully cold boot [as opposed to use of both soft-reboots and the reset switch], at which point the hardware is now 'happy' under 2.6.32.24.25 (and presumably would be under the prior kernel as well). Accordingly, please remember to give that a shot... and do mention if it's the only thing that works, as I suppose there could be an issue with the state 'warm' hardware comes up in.

After the working boot, there is still with the following noise in dmesg, but the HP on 9-2 has 'always' been petulant like this:

I'm having a similar problem after an update I installed this morning I'm running Kubuntu Lucid with kernel 2.6.32-24-generic (64bit)
In my case the issue involves my usb mouse and keyboard. I've checked and the keyboard an mouse are working in the bios but then are deactivated when linux boots.

As a workaround I've had to add a ps2 keyboard and mouse to get past the login screen. Then if I wait a couple of minutes the mouse ad kbd are enable.

Based on the syslog (att.) it looks to me like the usb HID drivers aren't being loaded until a bit more that 2 minutes after I begin the boot process.

The workaround linked by manatlan is working but forces usb1 speed.

It seems that also adding the "acpi=force irqpoll" boot option (as described here: http://www.ubuntugeek.com/how-to-fix-usb-stops-working-problem-in-ubuntu.html ) improves things a bit: it just revived my usb2 connectivity and seems to keep it working for now.

Could it be usb controller related (i.e. Intel ICH8)?

I'm not quite sure it's the exact same problem I'm experiencing, but I do get the error -110 when plugging my 8GB SDHC card in my Toshiba Portégé R830 card reader.

What's weird is that I can see (but not mount, not every time at least) the sd card in the kde device list, but not in the kde partitionmanager. I said not every time because I kinda manage to read the directory structure on the card, but then I couldn't read inside those folders.

The issue still exists in Ubuntu Natty. In my case, is caused by a USB webcam. If I unplug it and plug it again, the system starts without any problems.

There should be a way to ignore those errors and allow the system to continue detecting other usb devices like the keyboard and mouse instead of waiting it to reach the timeout.

I have this error on Kubuntu 11.10 my OCZ behemoth usb mouse no longer work.
I've plugged on system an externale 2,5" hard driver (with enclosure) and a kingstom pendrive.
after unplugged them and rebooted it seem to work.

I'm on Ubuntu 13.04 and I just got something similar happening to what the original submitter reported.

The system took 2 minutes to boot (as opposed to 10 seconds usually) and the mouse and keyboard didn't respond when the greeter appeared. I unplugged and replugged the mouse and keyboard, and they still didn't work. Some time later they started working on their own though.

Let me know if you'd like the dmesg log.

Happens to me sometimes when powering on from suspend -- any USB device plugged in will get the following:

No plugged-in USB device will be properly detected until a cold boot -- camera, mouse, keyboard or harddrive. This is Ubuntus 12.10 through 13.10; may be a hardware problem, but again: it only happens to me after the computer has been in Suspend power mode, and not every time.
