Karmic, kernel 2.6.31-3-generic
Samba 3.4.0
"NAS" disk is a shared Apple Time Capsule (perfectly accesible from OpenSuse 11 & Jaunty).
Tried mounting with "smbfs" and "cifs" filesystems.
Another test I tried with sucess is to access the shared disk with "smbclient", and in that scenario I CAN SEE THE FILES with no problem at all. For me it seems then that the mounting of the resource is the problem and discards any problem with the Samba version.
