Bug Description

On Babbage 2.0, I get something like 60-80 pixels of black on the top pixel row of the screen, at the left hand edge. This is observable primarily when X is running, but I'm guessing it probably happens the rest of the time as well. This strip of pixels is permanent and X does not appear to be able to draw over it.

Often, but not always, there is also a black cell overlaying the top-left corner of the screen, coinciding with the black strip described in the previous paragraph. The cell appears to be the size of a text console character cell. If X draws over it (by animating the Applications menu for example), the black cell disappears for a fraction of a second and the reappears, as if the cell is being redrawn many times a second.

My best guess is that these problems are bugs in the framebuffer driver stack or possible hardware issues, but I've not been able to investigate further.

I don't know whether either of these issues affects Babbage 2.5.

Kernel command line:
console=ttymxc0,115200 console=tty0 file=/cdrom/preseed/ubuntu.seed boot=casper quiet splash --

I see it too, but only in the live session.

I suspect usplash/xsplash might be interfering.

Similarly, running the installed system, I get the strip of black pixels on the top pixel row, but the black character cell (or whatever it is) in the top left corner doesn't appear any more.

The black cell is there in the live session.

I see this also, though sometimes even in the live session, I do not see the black rectangle. When I do see it, holding the mouse over it seems to make it sometimes reappear until you move the mouse away. Also, I see the thin black strip you describe, even after booting into the installed system
