Marking this incomplete as the latest gdm version in Lucid 2.30.0-ubuntu5 doesn't have such a menu. The source I downloaded (2.30.2.is.2.30.0-0ubuntu3) is also not working. A forum post suggested the following desktop entry:

[Desktop Entry]
Encoding=UTF-8
Name=Custom
Comment=Custom Xsession
Exec=/etc/X11/Xsession
TryExec=xterm
Icon=
Type=Application
X-Ubuntu-Gettext-Domain=gdm
