Ubuntu 9.04 beta desktop fails to boot from usb-stick

There were no problems to boot ubuntu 9.04 alpha 6 64-bit desktop from usb stick for me, but the beta fails (both 32-bit and 64-bit).

At first everything seems to be normal, till the boot splash appears. Than there are multiple HDD actions (on my internal HDD, not on the USB-stick).

Using alt + F1 I get the following error message:

modprobe: FATAL: Could not load /lib/modules/2.6.28-11-generic/modules.dep: No such file or directory

After waiting some time (about one or two minutes) without any changes I come to a console. The file mentioned in the error message is available from that console.

This happens on my AMD64 compaq 6715b notebook as well, when trying to boot from a SD-card. The symptoms are exactly as described above. It also happens if I try to install kubuntu beta or xubuntu beta.

The ISO is put on the SD-card using the System->Administration->Create USB startup disk

Due to auslander's post it seems, that I chose the wrong package.
But which package could this error be related to? Any ideas?

My system is a Dell Inspiron 1501 (AMD Turion 64 X2) as well.
So everybody how mentioned his computer's architecture has an AMD-machine, right?
On my brother's Samsung R40 (Intel) there were no problems. (I tried it without recreating the USB-stick!)

Perhaps the error is relateted to the south bridge?
Daniel Rozo and I have a Dell Inspiron 1501 having SB600 from ATI.
The south bridge of bwashed's compaq 6715b is SB600, too, if the informations I found using google are right.
If that is true, at least three of us have the same south bridge.

What about the others? Do you have the same south bridge?

You can find it out by running

lspci

from a terminal.

And look for "SB600" in the output.

I attach the hole output of lspci, perhaps there are other similarities in our hardware.

One thing I've noticed lately is that I have to delete the partitions on my removable device before running usb-creator, thereby forcing usb-creator to format from scratch before applying the ISO image. Can you guys try that? If it makes a difference, then the issue is likely not kernel related (though I can't say for sure what it might be).

I had this problem like an hour ago, Tim set me straight. Yes please format and re-create the USB flash, also I selected "discard settings on shutdown". Please remember to click on the "QUIT" button when USB flash creator is done, only then unmount/eject device.

I'm on an ECS A780GM-A motherboard with an SB700. lspci attached. FWIW, I'm using Unetbootin to write the image off of my torrented file. If someone will point me at a partitioner/formatter, I'd be happy to try that as well.

I guess it would be a kernel related problem?, I have tried creating the bootable usb from Intrepid usind usb-creator, also tried on jaunty (on a virtual machine with usb support), after that tried to do it deleting the partition and forcing usb-creator to format and also selecting "discard settings on shutdown".
Nothing worked, it always showed the same message.
Do you know how can I attach the dmesg output from booting the usb (since it stop booting and show a initram console)?
Does it would help?

Yesterday I tried it again.
While the system tries to read from my internal HDD, I removed the usb-stick and repluged it 1 second later.
And then the system boots up correctly!
I tried it several times and it works all the time.

After booting as explained above, I had a look at gnome-system-log.
I think the attached casper.log is related to this bug.

Daniels workaround worked on Compaq 6715b. Removed and inserted the sd-card as described and that seemed to get it out of the cycle. I did only test the first "try-without-installing option" from the menu.

I confirm this method works too.

I have a SB700 based motherboard, and with beta and RC I have exactly the same issue if I try to boot with a live USB key.

And the first time I try to unplugged/repluged USB key when the upslash appears was the good one !

Just before the upslash, it seems I have get a message invoking a "ata1 softreset" or something like that, and during the upslah (if I do nothing), Jaunty seems to look on other disk but not on the USB key (no LED activity).

Anyway, thanks for this temporary solution !

I created a bootable USB Flash Drive using the Jaunty RC .iso. It begins to boot normally, but before it finishes it drops to an initramfs prompt. If I enter "exit" it goes to another initramfs prompt. After entering exit again and getting another initramfs prompt, and then one more time (four total), it boots normally and brings Jaunty up. Unfortunately it does NOT remember any changes that I make to Jaunty or any of the programs under Jaunty, but otherwise all the programs work and it connects to the network, etc.

8.04, 8.10, and Jaunty's Beta version worked fine from a USB Flash Drive, and things like changing the background, adding links to Firefox, or whatever were sticky from boot-to-boot. It appears to be only the RC that works differently.

Please let me know if I can provide any additional information on this issue.

I have the same problem as Steve. If I remove "persistent" from the kernel string, it works OK. (but no persistence of course). With persistence, symptoms identical. It seems to timeout after mounting squashfs. If you wait for USB data reads to stop, then exit shell, it mounts further disks, and after 4th exit it continues on to full desktop. (but no persistent storage) I have tried the usb-creator with 4GB memory stick and 80GB 2.5" usb (laptop) disk. Identical in both situations.

Using usb-creator without persistent storage boots/works as advertised. (no persistent storage)

I have downloaded the latest overnight build (20th April) and installed to usb disk via usb-creator. It now works as advertised with peristence. PROBLEM SOLVED (persistent storage not working - not booting correctly)

@confusador, thanks for testing and the feedback. I believe you may be seeing bug 364538. One of our kernel devs will be uploading a fix shortly. If you could test and provide your feedback that would be great.

If anyone else still has issues after testing the latest daily image please also see bug 364538 in case you may be experiencing that issue instead.

I tried the release. The install bug still remains. These are my experiences with RC and release:

* RC Xubuntu (normal install) -> Fails. Symptoms as reported by first poster

* RC Xubuntu (with "re-insert sd card"-workaround) -> Works. The "FATAL: Could not load /lib/modules..." appears on every boot but system appears to work fine.

* RC Xubuntu(with "exit initram"-workaround) -> Fails.

* RC Ubuntu (any workaround) -> Fails. I had multiple attempts using either of the workarounds. Never got this iso to install.

* Release Ubuntu (normal install) -> Fails:
  - After the initial modprobe-error, this is what I get:

Choosing persistent storage or discard data when creating usb-disk doesn't make any difference in any of the installs. Neither does it make a difference whether I format the SD-card before create the USB-disk or not.

I have the same problem with a Dell Vostro 1000 laptop with the SB600 ATI southbridge, R482 northbridge and Sempron 3600+ cpu.

The boot stops with the message about modules.dep when I try to use an USB key.

The use of noacpi=off and related options don't solve the problem.

The trick of removing the USB key and replugging it 1 second after worked.

I have this same problem with a USB-stick containing a LUKS-key.

The problem occurs only with kernel 2.6.28-11-server but not with kernel 2.6.27-11-server both with Ubuntu 9.04 Server Edition. Bothe kernels are present on same disk.

During boot a get this message "modprobe FATAL could not load li/modules/2.6.8-11-server/modules.dep", but the file is present on the disk.

The Boot-proces does continue but loading of early encrypted files does not succeed because it cannot find the USB-device with the LUKS keys.

Hardware is Gigabyte board MA78GM-D2SH with AMD 4850e CPU

I'm very sorry to answer so late, but my only Internet connection was a 3G connection this week. And that is too slow and too costly to download an .iso image.
I checked the final release, but it did not work. (Unplugging and plugging the device still works.)
Bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/casper/+bug/363038 appears for me, too. But only if I tried the RC with persistent file system enabled. The bug described here appears with all version since beta even without persistent file system.

Perhaps it will be a good idea to install Jaunty on an USB-device and then try if this will boot up correctly.
If so we will know that this bug is not related to casper.
Sorry that I can't do this on my own, but I have no large enough USB-device.

I reproduced this issue on my Desktop. (with the Jaunty Desktop iso and a 2Go USB stick)
In my point of view, it is a hardware issue, as :
With my Desktop [AMD64 + HardDrive S-ATA] , I reproduce BusyBox every time.
With my Dell Laptop : Never got any issue with the same USB stick.
Note : the workaround worked for me too with the Desktop : The USB Led stopped flashing just after the splash-screen. then a USB hard reset makes the USB-Live work.

same issue and daniel's fix working here with a SB700 southbridge and the final release here and after reading all reports it seems to be pretty hardware dependent to newer AMD chipsets. so anyone who can falsificate this suspicion with his/her hardware please step up. meaning if you suffer from this bug and have nvidia, intel, whatever chipsets do a posting here right now ;)

hello i am new to linux and i want to try out ubuntu but i dont want my changes to be erased every time i reboot

i did a persistent install on a 2 gb usb using the tool in the live cd
i have already checked my live cd for error and it says that there are no errors

when the usb persistent install tool finished i rebooted using the usb ( the live cd was no longer inside)
the ubuntu menu that says
"try without any changes to your computer
install ubuntu
check for defects" (something like that)
this menu comes up fine

but the problem starts when i choose try without any changes to your computer
after a little while of loading the screen turns black and i get exactly this:

i am pretty sure the problem is not my usb drive because i was able to install ubuntu 8.10 and use it by doing the same method
before i installed i tried formatting my usb drive to fat32 and fat
please help me out i really want this work because i love ubuntu 9.04 but i cant install it on my computer due to other issues
i forgot to mention i have tried reformatting it and installin it again with the same cd but i got the same problem
i also used the method in pendrivelinux.com but i got an error aswell ( i dont remember if it was exactly the same but i think it was)
does it matter if the cd is amd64 or i386 because mine is amd64 and my computer has a amd athlon x 2 5200 processor so i know it supports it

i tried doing a full installation to an 8 gb usb but i had the same problem so it is not the casper loop file

I just uploaded kernel 2.6.28-12.43 to proposed. As this kernel includes some changes that affect the access of usb storage devices at boot, could someone affected try to upgrade the kernel of the usb installation with the one from proposed and let us know about the outcome? Thanks.

I just tried your new kernel and it worked for me.
The USB-stick is found and my LUKS-key also and all encrypted disks are unlocked.

This should work. It's not a real solution, but you are able to try Ubuntu this way.

I'm only familiar with the commandline which I use on my server installs.

First you need to add the jaunty proposal repository to your /etc/apt/sources.list and do an update of your cache.
You can then search your cache for available images using "sudo apt-cache search linux-image-2.6.28-12".

Next "sudo apt-get install linux-image-2.6.28-12-xxxxx" (where xxxxx = server or general or any of the other types) will install a new kernel image and add it to your grub-menu where you can select it during startup.

do i do them when i get the black screen with the error message or using a live cd?
(i am not experienced so please help make it easy for me)

this is just a general question

i have already reformatted my usb device many times because the usb install was not successful so will that be bad to my usb flash drive? (about 10 times maybe a little more)

I'm sorry Danny, but my comments are of no use to you. I thought you already had a functional ubuntu installation running and were having trouble after the upgrade.
So I'm afraid you have to wait until a new installer becomes available or otherwise revert to 8.10 Intrepid first and do an upgrade from there and making sure you keep a working old kernel and install this new kernel beside the old one.

I'm only a little bit familiar with server commandlines and no expert on Linux at all, so please search the forum and documents section for information on other type of installs.

I don't know how to change the kernel the live usb-stick boots from. I can't find anything about that on the net, sorry.
If you know how do to this, let me know and I'll try if the bug is fixed in kernel 2.6.28-12.43.
Thus I can't confirmed that the bug is fixed in kernel 2.6.28-12.43, yet.

Today I noticed that my installed version of Jaunty did not mount an usb-stick, which is plugged in before turning on the computer. I believe this is due to the same issue.
With the kernel from proposed the usb-stick is mounted correctly! Therefore the bug seems to be fixed in the new kernel.

Is it possible to use this kernel on a virtual machine and then install ubuntu to the usb with the new kernel?
i have ubuntu 9.04 installed on virtualbox and the host operating system is windows 7 beta rc

To create the live cd image having the new kernel installed, I used uck from my installed system.
And this boots up properly, from my usb-stick.

I am marking this as a duplicate of bug #364538 as both are caused by the same problem. One (manual) work-around for me was to "modprobe usb-storage" on the initrd shell when the boot fails. But this should not be needed anymore with the latest kernel. I hopefully gets to updates soon.

I got the same problem on my DELL 1501 laptop computer.
and solved the this issue by the method mentioned above:

1 ) I changed the kernel boot options by removing "quiet splash" and adding "debug break=mount".

2) Once the busy box prompt appeared, unplugged the USB drive.

3) I then plugged the USB drive back in, and it was recognized. then exit the busybox.
