Bug Description

Hi,

Recently libvirt package in ubuntu has merged support for Intel Sapphire Rapids.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2028057

There is a support of Sapphire Rapids in qemu upstream as well.

https://github.com/qemu/qemu/commit/7eb061b06e9

Does this need to backport it to qemu in jammy for proper support ?

No
It isn't needed to work or even to support Saphire Rapids chips.

But is is useful if one wants to be able to specify Names to represent cpu models instead of long lists of features. At the end of the day, almost every SKU sold is slightly different even to the named models. Once comes with a particular feature more or less.

And thereby it would indeed help to complete bug 2028057.
As in the past for other newer chip types we try to add them, but not as a high priority.
The challenge often is not the cpu model itself, but the features it refers to.

They also need to be added, which sometimes is trivial definition of a bit and sometimes is quite complex.
In case of the latter there is the chance that one might break more than the bit of comfort (as it mostly only eases specifying cpu models by names) it provides.

Therefore triaging as valid, but low priority unless someone explains a more important use case that I might miss.

@Sergio - once time allows, please have a look which other patches we'd need.
Once we know that we can decide to add it fully to your and the teams queue, or to mark it Won't Fix.

P.S. The code already is in mantic and later
