Bug Description

Binary package hint: base-installer

The edgy installer doesn't work well in the time-zone selection.

You don't have a way to tell the installer that you time-zone is AST (America Santo Domingo): you can specify language (spanish) and keyboard (spanish), but you cannot specify that your spanish is Dominican Republic's one.

And I think the problem is active for all the other spanish-speaking users. If you aren't a skilled installer, you can't end the installation with locales set to es_DO.

I think the initial installer screen should present an option for the country. Or, alternatively, when recollecting data for installation, the country should be asked for.

Are you talking about the text-based installer or the graphical installer?

I saw the bug in edgy text-based installer

That's bizarre. You're certainly meant to be prompted for the country immediately after being prompted for the language, and the Dominican Republic is on the list of countries to suggest for Spanish ...

Oh, I see. Did you select Spanish at the very first screen, the one with "Install in text mode" etc. on it?

OK, this is a messy interaction between this and bug 30960. I'll have to think about how to solve this without breaking some other cases.

Assigning both bug tasks to Colin so it doesn't show up in my list of unassigned tasks and confuses me.

Unfortunately I don't think I can fix this for Feisty now; it's too delicate and there's too much risk of breaking something else. Sorry. The workaround is to leave the language setting alone at the CD boot menu and select it later instead.

This issue is still present in the alternate CD in gutsy. The following use cases fail:
- selecting a keyboard layout and then a language from the boot screen: the keyboard selection is ignored in favor of the default for the language, and cannot be changed later within d-i (workaround: select keyboard after selecting language)
- selecting a language from the boot screen: populates a default 'country' setting for the language which cannot be overridden within d-i (workaround: set language in d-i only, not at the boot screen)
- selecting a timezone: no timezones are available for selection other than those corresponding to your language/country choice, which can be a problem per the above.

Timezones are a separate design issue in tzsetup (bugs 28890 and 137264).
