Bug Description

[Impact]

Drag and drop files from Desktop to Nautilus freezes gnome-shell in Ubuntu 20.10. There is no way to recover without killing gnome-shell externally or rebooting.

[Test Case]

1. Create a file in ~/Desktop
2. Open a nautilus (Files) window of a different directory.
3. Drag the new file from the desktop into the nautilus (Files) window.

The shell should not become unresponsive. Also, the drag is expected to fail and snap back. That's a different issue (bug 1813441) not being fixed here.

[Where problems could occur]

An extension with syntax errors may fail to load leaving the user with reduced shell functionality. A more faulty extension might crash the entire shell after loading.

[Other Info]

Patch is in bug 1898005.

Hi Daniel! Thanks for your response.

F.Y.: this bug is different from bug 1813441. There, it is not possible to drag and drop (only).

This bug, in addition to not being able to drag and drop, gnome-shell crashes.

FYI this bug appears to happen when a file is dragged onto ANY application (including the sidebar) from the desktop. Not just Nautilus.

Hello,
Same issue for me, I can't drag and drop since last upgrade to 20.10.
For instance, drag file(s) from Desktop and drop to an open directory doesn't work.

So Nautilus From/to Desktop only seems to freeze gnome.

Hello Cristiano, or anyone else affected,

Accepted gnome-shell-extension-desktop-icons into groovy-proposed. The package will build now and be available at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell-extension-desktop-icons/20.04.0+git20200908-5~ubuntu20.10.0 in a few hours, and then in the -proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation on how to enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug, mentioning the version of the package you tested, what testing has been performed on the package and change the tag from verification-needed-groovy to verification-done-groovy. If it does not fix the bug for you, please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to verification-failed-groovy. In either case, without details of your testing we will not be able to proceed.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in advance for helping!

N.B. The updated package will be released to -updates after the bug(s) fixed by this package have been verified and the package has been in -proposed for a minimum of 7 days.

The new package fix the problem. Good job!

Here what I've done:
1. enabled the proposed repository
2. updated gnome-shell-extension-desktop-icons to version 20.04.0+git20200908-5~ubuntu20.10.0
3. Test case: created a file in the desktop and tried drag & drop inside an open folder. As expected drag & drop doesn't work, but now the shell doesn't freeze.

Hello,
I have update the package like proposed and finaly all other proposed ones
too and I have exactly the same behavior than Jeremie Tamburini.
No more freeze, only drag n drop from/to Desktop to Nautilus doesn't work.
A good first step! : )
Thanks and merry christmas.

What is the expected date for this patch to be merged with a main branch or whatever. So I could get it with "apt update"?

Thanks
