Ubuntu hangs shortly after booting with kernel 4.13.0-36

After upgrading to linux 4.13.0-36 my laptop hangs shortly after booting, even before logging in to the desktop. It starts with the interface being unresponsive but the mouse cursor moving, and shortly after that the mouse cursor also hangs intermittently and then permanently.

Linux 4.13.0-32 works fine.

My laptop is a Dell XPS 13 9360 with an Core i5 7200u.

This kernel (4.13.0-36.40) hangs for me as well, but it's much earlier in the boot process so it doesn't even get to the point where it would ask me for my dm-crypt password. The fallback image (4.13.0-32.35) boots fine though.

I started a kernel bisect between 4.13.0-32 and 4.13.0-36. The kernel bisect will require testing of about 7-10 test kernels.

I built the first test kernel, up to the following commit:
721530cf07670fc34547cf12b6f69b2c53e890dc

Can you test that kernel and report back if it has the bug or not? I will build the next test kernel based on your test results.

Joseph, the bisected kernel (4.13.0-33) seems to have the bug. It hangs my laptop just as 4.13.0-36

Maybe we are facing different bugs. In my case, it does boot, but it hangs shortly after. If I hurry, I am even able to log in to the desktop.

Sounds like different bug indeed. For me it hangs pretty much immediately after GRUB and I don't even see the plymouth screen with the Ubuntu logo or the password promt for dm-crypt. Tried many times, same result every time.

I have quite different system specs as well, not the Dell laptop mentioned earlier, but rather a desktop based on the AMD Ryzen CPU.

Perhaps I should wait and see how this goes and I'f I encounter the problem after Joseph's issue is fixed then I file my own bug report?

I ended up updating to Ubuntu 18.04 dev. An update to the BIOS of my laptop made it completely unstable to the point of not booting most of the time. Ubuntu 18.04 seems to work fine so far.

Kristoffer, did you file your bug report yet? I think I'm experiencing the exact same issue. After Grub, my system hangs with the 4.13.0-36 kernel. I just see a flashing cursor. 4.13.0-32 boots fine.

I'm using Ubuntu 16.04.3 on a Thinkpad T430u with an Intel i5-3317U.

No, I did not make bug report yet, but I've tried a bunch of different kernels to try and find out where the issue started.

I tried kernels from:

And:
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/?C=N;O=D

The last good kernel was, as in your case 4.13.0-32.35 and the first bad was 4.13.0-33.36. The ones from the mainline repo does not seem to have the issue, nor did the 4.13.0-33 that Joseph posted earlier in this thread.

An update to my laptop's BIOS completely borked my Ubuntu 17.10 installation and I had to upgrade to Ubuntu 18.04 dev.

I don't think I can test the new kernel :/

I'm having similar symptons to the original issue after upgrading from 17.10 -> 18.04

Specifically:

I'm able to boot past GRUB and login.
Shortly after login the UI becomes unresponsive
Then the mouse freezes
Then completely dead.

My laptop is similar to the original post: Dell XPS 15
As this feels slightly in the realm of graphics, I'm ising the inbuilt Intel graphics, not the nvidia GPU.

Similar to the original post, the fallback kernel works for me, though the versions differ from the original.

Problem occurs on 4.15.0-20-generic
Using 4.13.0-39-generic seems to work.

Please let me know what other information I can provide to assist.

Dell XPS 15 - Same issue. I first upgraded Ubuntu 17.10->18.0. That worked but shutdown was very slow. Then I reinstalled 18.04 today to get a fresh start. But after boot, when entering password, laptop freezes completely. I also try "try Ubuntu" and that also fails.

Terrible; laptop completely unusable now :( 18.04 might be released but highly discouraged to install it yet on XPS...

After a fresh install of Ubuntu 18.04 (about an hour ago) on my Gigabyte P55W v5, and same problem: right after logging in, everything freezes... and that's about it. I waited for 15 minutes, and nothing happened.

The original bug reporter is unable to reproduce this bug, so would it be possible for others affected to test the latest mainline kernel? It is available for download from:
