Bug Description

Binary package hint: zeitgeist

Asus eee 1005P netbook 1 Gb RAM. Ubuntu 11.04 i386 desktop
Nothing unusual installed, but two indicators.
Right after booting zeitgeist-daemon uses 177,6 Mb RAM, and continues to get higher.
There is nothing that i can figure out that triggers this.

Please search in synaptic for "zeitgeist fts' (without quotes). There is a
zeitgeist fts extension. Is it installed?

I don't know if its related but my Compiz runs over 270mB memory use?

Nope. That is not the case.

BTW can you unistall that fts package and then run the command (to restart zeitgeist)
zeitgeist-daemon --replace

and then report the memory usage

This is a similar bug report,
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/zeitgeist/+bug/757727

Since you are using 32-bit and still getting this problem

Hi, Manish. Thank you for your replies.
Sorry for my late reply, i was away on at extended week end.
I found out that the Compiz memory usage was related to an leaking indicator. I have removed it completely.
As you requested i removed the "Zeitgeist-extension-fts" package and now the memory usage of zeitgeist daemon is about 5,3 Mb and stable.
As i described in my "Bug Description" i have seen bug #757727 but am unsure about if it is the same bug. My bug does not require a searches in dash for the memory usage to run high, and it seems that it is related only to the 64 bit version. -please advice.

That bug is not only for dash searches but anything that invokes fts extension usage. it was tracked down to a leak in 64-but xapian.

I can see you can using i386 and not 64-bit, so the issue is somewhere else.

The first thing is to find out whether fts is the culprit. Please install fts and then see if the memory again shoot up and then removing fts again brings it down. If this pattern can be reproduced then we can single out the problem in fts.

I installed the "Zeitgeist-extension-fts" again and logged out/in and the system monitor reported memory usage of Zeitgeist-Damon to be 177,6 Mb.
After I again uninstalled "Zeitgeist-extension-fts", logged out/in, the memory usage is down to 5,2 Mb.
During the weekend i noticed that my Dash search has broken, it cannot find anything, and couldn't at the time after i reinstalled Zeitgeist-extension-fts.

affects: zeitgeist (Ubuntu) → zeitgeist-extensions (Ubuntu)

Hi. I have lost patience with the missing functionality of the dash, and have now reinstalled my computer.
The Zeitgeist problem has not been persistent after the re-installation, so please close this bug.

After re-installation the bug changed behaviour. The high memory usage after login did stop, but I have the same bug as #757727. After using dash a couple of times the Zeitgeist-daemon memory usage is very high.
I have this bug on two computers running Natty desktop i386. -there are nothing special about my installations, they are pretty much standard.

After using search in Dash (finding application) memory spikes to 5,9 GiB. That's due to Zeitgeist-fst which is using 4,9 GiB.

The strange thing is.. When I check Synaptic for zietgeist-fts than the the status is...it's not installed!
