I forgot to mention that I can boot using the old kernel (3.13.0-35-powerpc-smp) from Lubuntu 14.04.1

Seems to also affect the 3.16.0-17-23 kernel that is on the two 20140923 ISO images

Did any previous utopic kernels boot? Do we know when exactly this broke?

sounds like something similar happened in lucid or hardy where the kernel was bigger than yaboot could handle. that may NOT be the problem, but it needs some testing.

there's some talk of going to grub2 as a default bootloader rather than yaboot but it's extremely doubtful that will happen in time for release, so i'd start checking older kernels.

As a data point, the utopic kernel boots fine with trusty yaboot on a 64-bit machine, so this issue is limited to the 32-bit kernel.

that would be something good to verify on 32 (ahem lars)

How would I tell yaboot to choose another kernel? Here are the two I can choose from in the 20140923 image:

linux-image-3.16.0-17-powerpc64-smp_3.16.0-17.23_powerpc.deb
linux-image-3.16.0-17-powerpc-smp_3.16.0-17.23_powerpc.deb

^-- Could be this config change between trusty and utopic.
