Bug Description

Binary package hint: synaptic

In Xubuntu the Synaptic is not shown in system tray then new updates are about to be installed.

I have it checked to update every day and also download but not install. I have never been asked to install updates and I must check manually.

adept is not installed. I did not know that I had to install it.

I installed Xubuntu Herd2 from CD and have updated to this point and I have never got any notification that I have to install it.

I did got a message box that I should check Synaptic and mark automatic updates in repositories and I thought that it would fix the problem.

This may be a thing to add to Xubuntu by default?!

Is this a bug or a "feature"?

It looks like a bug.

Can you please run:
$ ls -l /var/lib/apt/periodic/

and attach the output here?

Thanks,
 Michael

PS adept is not required, Sebastian just wanted to make sure that we have all the information that may be relevant.

Hi, this is my output of "ls -l /var/lib/apt/periodic/"

rancor@rancor-laptop:~$ ls -l /var/lib/apt/periodic/
total 0

-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 2007-03-04 21:59 update-stamp
rancor@rancor-laptop:~$

I just started the computer and did this at once. I haven't used this since the 5th of mars.

Thanks for this additional information.

It looks like it tries to run the update. What is the output of:
"ls -l /var/lib/apt/periodic/ /var/lib/apt/lists"

Thanks,
 Michael

Thanks a lot.

Could you please check if the update-notifier application is runing on your system? Maybe xubuntu does not honor /etc/xdg/autostart and that is why its not there?

Thanks,
 Michael

I looked and there was no update-notifier installed. I used Synaptic and installed it.

I thought this was supposed to be a standard utility to insure that the system was up to date but I have only used Ubuntu before, not Xubuntu. Maybe Xubuntu does not include this app by default?

Right, xubuntu does not include the update-notifier application in its default install. I reassign to xubuntu desktop as a whishlist bug.

update-notifier depends on gnome-vfs and libgnomeui, thus it is not in the default xubuntu install. Both of those dependencies are replaceable (by gamin and eggsmclient) it just did not happen yet, I hope I'll have time for feisty+1.

I thanks every body for the help and time spent on my "bug".

Dear Jani.

I think this is very important issue due the security risk of a unpatched system and I think a big portion of the responsibility leis at the developers of the OS and in this case the Xubuntu team.

I'm sorry that I don't have the knowledge of helping you to build a native XFCE application for this purpose.

It must not be advanced as update-notifier but some how just give the users a notification to run Synaptic if there is important upgrades available.

So what's best? Patch update notifier to remove gnome deps or write it from scratch?

I haven't written a single line of C since school but I hope there is a security and user friendly coder out there what will fix this security issue. There are still a lot of low performance computer that needs XFCE or similar window manager with users that are not skilled enough to patch their system. They need something that rings the bell and tells them to update.

I'm willing to do it as long as the update-notifier is written in C.
If so can you please provide me a link where to download the
sources?
