meta key (alt key) combinations don't work in xterm

Bug Description

launch xterm
launch emacs in xterm
$ emacs -nw
press M-x, it doesnt do M-x, it intead does M-c M-8

I resolved that putting
*VT100*utf8: 1
*VT100*eightBitInput: false
*VT100*eightBitControl: false
*VT100*eightBitOutput: true

in /etc/X11/app-defaults/XTerm

If you're going to do all of that, the uxterm script is already designed
to set the locale and fonts properly for UTF-8 mode.

I don't have gutsy. I maintain xterm, and was pointing out that the
resource settings were not strictly necessary.

I had the same issue running Ubuntu 7.04 and it was
resolved with the suggested fix.

I have this problem when running irssi through ssh/screen in an xterm. I can't use meta+# to change which channels I'm on.

You can work around this with ESC+# or /window list (for a list of channels) and /window #
