Bug Description

With Xubuntu 9.10 on a TV monitor (640x480 native resolution), if I set the resolution to 1024x768 (or any other higher resolution than 640x480) and then reboot, I'll be stuck on GDM, and will not load the Xfce desktop (come back to GDM again and again), until I remove the /home/user/.config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-prechannel-xml/displays.xml file via a tty terminal.

Back with Xubuntu 9.04, the desktop always loaded with a 640x480 resolution even if I seted it higher. It wasn't optimal but at least it worked.

I know I report this bug for a powerpc arch which is unsupported, but it's unrelated cause I founded the same bug on a i386 arch.

AFAICT, xsplash is probably making X segfault and the session be closed when its resolution (the default xorg one) doesn't match the user preferred one (as set in xfce4-settings). Xfce4-settings-helper (spawned by xfce4-session) restores the user preferred resolution while xsplash is running, which doesn't seem to like that. I can easily reproduce this on karmic by setting a lower resolution; unfortunately it's currently impossible to get a proper Xorg backtrace either on karmic or lucid.
