I can not believe I am the only one who has this problem. The logfile shows that it's using the trident driver. What do you mean by "vesa, should be vga"?

And there is no native 3D support for trident, so you're out of luck on any distro. Installing nvidia drivers don't help anything, just makes things worse.

the card that I am using is a apg/vga 3d video card. Vessa is a generic driver with limited functions.. Its like running in safe mode. You have less adjustment and lower resolution. Xorg is showing it as a vesa driver. which is ok if you dont mind fuzzy and distorted pictures. I have used ubuntu since 2004, and it has always installed as a vga driver. I am duel booting with ubuntu 11,04 and it is installed as a vga driver. The graphics are fine on it. 11.10 installs it as vesa and the graphic are screwed up. I dont care about 3d because I cant see 3d. Both are the same to me. It takes two eyes to see 3d and I only have one. I just want to be able to see the screen clearly. I tried the new suse with gnome3 and it worked right as far as graphics were cocerned. Dont like suse and want to stay with ubuntu. thanks

some one who knows the difference between vesa and vga needs to look at this.

I have installed linux mint 12. Gnome 3 still does the same thing. However in mate it installs it correctly. It looks like gnome 3 is using the wrong xorg trident driver. I would expect it to be the same in both. This is a bug in the xorg trident driver and should be reopened. Thanks

12.04 has the same results. I installed xubuntu 12.04 It gives me more display options and works fine. Did an upgrade to ubuntu 12.04 through synaptic. Gnome and unity stiil dont work. I can log back into xubuntu. and it woks fine. I would expect both desktops to use the same xorg trident driver, but they dont. Why.
