Video playback does, in fact, work, but once again, there is a work around. The problem with vlc is it attempts to use the wrong playback plugin. I'm at work, so I can't give you specifics, but the quick and dirty is to open vlc, go to options (preferences?), go to video options (modules?/plugins?), and change the default playback module from default to xv, or x11. I think you may have to enable advanced options to be able to see this option. I'm going from memory, and I can't recall for sure.
