Thanks for your report. It seems that without xorg.conf, default sync ranges are used:
(II) SAVAGE(0): <default monitor>: Using default hsync range of 31.50-37.90 kHz
(II) SAVAGE(0): <default monitor>: Using default vrefresh range of 50.00-70.00 Hz
and there is no hint of EDID readout.

I think I have seen other reports of EDID not being read out, but it works fine on my laptop with savage Twister. And it obviously work when running Xorg -configure.

Can you please attach the log generated when running Xorg -configure ?

I have uploaded lucid and maverick packages to my PPA https://launchpad.net/~tormodvolden/+archive/ppa which will print more in the log, so it would be good if you can attach the new log using this and no xorg.conf.

Kurt, in the log you attached in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mesa/+bug/579071/comments/23 I can see that EDID was read out. Did the correct resolution appear in that case?

Thanks! From looking at the log, everything seems to be fine. EDID is read out, and it sets up 1024x768@85 which is the mode preferred by the monitor. At the end of the log, 1024x768@60 is set, I suppose this is something Gnome does, maybe because of a user preference in ~/.config/monitors.xml.

What goes wrong in this case?
