Bug Description

Binary package hint: debian-installer

the installer doesn't recognise correctly an Apple cinema display 22" on a G4 Cube. The screen is split with a large vertical grey band between 7/10th and 8/10th. The corresponding text secttion is missing. I have a low res picture but can't post it.

I get this on a dual G3 ibook with the live CD. Everything goes well until the final splash then I get the double screens (horizontally).

Thank you for your bug report. Does this problem persist with Ubuntu 6.10 (Edgy Eft)?

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue for you. Can you try with the latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.

The problem was still present with Hoardy. I may be able to test it again in a few months.

I'm not sure if you mean Hoary or Hardy... but I will assume Hardy as Hoary is quite old :-)

Doing a little research (as I don't have a mac) I could at least confirm that other users were having issues configuring Hardy and Intrepid on a G4, and have suggested xorg.conf file changes and suggestions to specify the resolution and frequencies of your monitor in some cases, and/or by switching to the frame buffer driver.

Have you tried these.

This will help round down if it is a driver issue or if it's just not detecting the monitor correctly.

Changing package to xserver-xorg-driver-ati as I suspect this is more of a XORG issue than an installer issue per say...

Actually the source package is xserver-xorg-video-ati, the -driver- package is not in use.

Nicolas, can you please attach that photo?

G3 Cube, that would be a Rage 128 card, right? Please attach /var/log/Xorg.0.log and the output from "lspci -vvnn".

yes, but for now the box is running Lenny. I should have the opportunity
to reinstall it, would you like that I re-install dapper or intrepid?

The newest you can get :) You can also try a live CD, http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ports/daily-live/current/ but wait for it to be updated, because you will need xserver-xorg-core 1.6, and the -manifest file will tell you that the current one from Feb 27 has only 1.5.99.

I hope to reinstall the cube this month, but for now it's a production box.

You can use the live CD to test without touching your existing installation.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. My apologies as I should not have marked this Invalid. The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Maverick Meerkat. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the next release of Ubuntu. You can find out more about the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ . Thanks again and we appreciate your help.
