Attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file.
If you can from after reproducing this issue (switch to console by shortcut ALT+CTRL+F1) or /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old after reboot.

SOLVED

I downloaded the official source from http://openchrome.org, compiled and installed it, now my system works perfectly.
However, I suggest leaving this bug in open state, for helping others solving this problem.

Thanks for all team!

The easiest solution is install xserver-xorg-video-openchrome (1:0.2.904+svn858-1) driver from Natty:
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/natty/+source/xserver-xorg-video-openchrome

Check if it works for you.

Install how? Can we have instructions please?
My synaptic package manager still shows version svn842.
If this really fixes a widespread bug, why isn't it accesible via
update manager or synaptic package manager?

I checked the above link and there are no installation instructions there either.

I would like to find if it solve this bug.

Try to download/install following package:
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+archive/primary/+files/xserver-xorg-video-openchrome_0.2.904%2Bsvn858-1_amd64.deb

Many thanks. I tried the ....amd64.deb,
setting the driver in xorg.conf to 'openchrome' and there is an improvement.
I can now get 1600x1200 resolution, which is better than
the maximum I could get for the last two months of 1280x768 with the 'vesa'.

However, the Xserver says it could not apply/support stored settings
of 1920x1080, which gives my Acer X243HQ Monitor the correct
aspect ratio. I used to get it under Ubuntu 10.04. Is there some fix
for getting around that?

I installed DEB package, now my system works great!!!
I've used a compiled version of openchrome.org driver for my system 'til now, then I removed that before installing DEB.

Thanks for all community, for help and patience =D

I've just installed the package mentioned in comment #16 and can confirm that this package solves the problem I described in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-openchrome/+bug/678163 for me as well.
