Bug Description

Binary package hint: ubuntu-docs

I am using Ubuntu for the 1st time. I installed 9.10 on a Via K8MM-V motherboard with an AMD Sempron 2800+ processor and a Dell 2408WFP monitor. Try as I might, I ccan't get the resolution to go up more than 800x600. It says the monitor is unknown. The Hardware section is empty.

Attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file.

Please build/install the latest openchrome driver and enable debug mode.
The detail build instruction for Ubuntu/Debian is available at:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/OpenChrome

Then use new mode switch by adding to your xorg.conf file following lines:
   Option "modeSwitch" "new"

I'm using Asus M2V-MX -motherboard with K8M890CE, max resolution 800x600. Ubuntu 9.10. The Square Cursor bug (bug 377402) also affecting the computer. Open Office and several other programs fail to display the tool icons. The usability of the computer is therefore at minimum.

Option "modeSwitch" "new" or
Option "modeSwitchMethod" "new"

does not make any difference - the same bugs exist.
