Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-nv

I have a widescreen LCD monitor for which the native resolution is 1440x900. On install of feisty (herd5) the display is set for 1280x1024. Running 'dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg' allows me to select 1440x900 and the 'nv' driver. Everything else was left set to the defaults. Unfortunately after a '/etc/init.d/gdm restart' the resolution of the signal reaching the monitor is '1280x800'. This doesn't look sharp (as it isn't the native res) and the bottom part of the desktop isn't visible.

Installing the binary 'nvidia' drivers package and reconfiguring xorg again produces a single line change:
92c92
< Driver "nv"
---
> Driver "nvidia"

This resolves the problem and leaves my display in the correct resolution. I will attach my xorg.conf and the log files from a successful 'nvidia' start and a 'nv' start which leaves the display in the wrong resolution. Let me know if I can supply any further information or run any tests.

That driver gives a slightly different log but exactly the same bug is still there. I am left in the wrong resolution, with the bottom part of the screen not visible.

Sorry I haven't got back to you after asking for that. Do you notice how the modes advertised do not include 1440x900? nv doesn't have an ignore edid option, so the panel's report is likely conflicting with your xorg.conf settings. As it happens, EDID simply can't represent 1440x900.

As it happens, I'm running 1440x900 on gutsy with nv. I'll attach my xorg.conf in case it has any secrets you find enlightening, but I'm not sure why it works. If you could try with Gutsy, that might enlighten.

Justin,

With your xorg.conf, I see the same result- X doesn't start in 1440x900.
Also I've tried starting X with the monitor completely disconnected,
which also leaves the display in the wrong resolution.

I have tried this out with latest Debian testing (lenny) and see the
same bug, it seems.

I'll attach the X log from a load with latest X and your xorg.conf.

Thanks for your help. If you have any other suggestions I'd be keen to
try them.

Andrew.
