Bug Description

Running 7.04 alpha 5 live cd, on Mandrivadrake 2005 (10.0), with IBM Thinkvision monitor,
I think 21" (maybe 22). Symptom is that System -> Preferences->Screen Resolution in
Gnome only offers 768x1024, 800x600 and 600x400. Refresh rate is set to 60 hz with
no possibility to change. Other and older distributions recognize this monitor, which is a
very good one.

I did steps 1-3 in your howto, and the attachments requested in step 5
are with this message.I didnt finish step 4, as the semi-graphical
console program asked questions I didnt know the answer to, but did
mess around and had a new xorg.conf saved; the original is attached
also (xorg.conf.orig).

The symptoms are,

1) When booting from live-cd, the dark console screen with the ubuntu
logo shows bands of thin brown/red lines near the top. There is also
a small ubuntu-colored residual at the left of the progress bar.

2) All is fine, Gnome logs in, but resolution is low (768x1024) and
the System->Preferences->Screen Resolution doesnt offer higher
resolutions.

I wanted to make a screenshot btw, but found that the screenshot tool
cannot take a region made with the mouse, but only whole windows ..
can this be true .. or perhaps a bug as well?

Can you predict when or if this will be fixed? I have submitted all
information asked for (2.5 months ago), and there are two duplicates
that are stalled because of "undecided" and "needs info".

Hi Niels,

I'm very sorry there's not been much reply on your bug until now. The good news is that a lot of work has been done on monitor resolution autodetection issues for Gutsy, and it's likely your issue has been solved, particularly bug 27667. If not, we've also added a new GUI Screen & Graphics tool for specifying them.

There are still some open bugs we've not yet solved, the most common of which is bug 94994; you can see if that is your bug by running ddcprobe and seeing if it gives an 'edidfail' in its output; this potentially may be fixed for Gutsy if I have luck working on it. Another still-open bug similar to this one is 49827; I hope to solve that one for Hardy.

Also, thanks for offering to pay consulting to look at it, but hopefully we can solve it in Gutsy without that. But do note that Canonical now does offer paid support options, which you may find of value for other issues.
