Bug Description

This is for Intrepid Ibex.

I have had this happen twice in the last two days. I can see the progress bar come up but a black screen comes up instead of the login screen. I wasn't able to kill X with ctrl-Backspace. However, it's not a hard hang. Caps-lock will turn the relevant light on and off. I powered off in each case and was able to login on the second boot.

I've attached all the logs that I think are relevant. Let me know if you need anything else.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Please attach your X server configuration file (/etc/X11/xorg.conf) and X server log file (/var/log/Xorg.0.log) to the bug report as individual uncompressed file attachments using the "Attachment:" box below. Could you please also try to run without any /etc/X11/xorg.conf and let Xorg autodetect your display and video card? When you do please also attach the /var/log/Xorg.0.log from this attempt. Thanks in advance.

Xorg.0.log is already attached above as "Failure case" and "Success case".

Here's xorg.conf.

I removed xorg.conf and restarted Ubuntu. Below is the attached Xorg.0.log for that case. There was an /etc/X11/xorg.conf.failsafe file that I didn't remove. Is this a problem?

It would be interesting for us to know whether this bug was fixed in jaunty (then we might be able to search through the changes and find a patch for intrepid as well). If you can download the jaunty live CD and boot that, this would be very useful. Thanks.

The fix for bug 385658 redoes how card detection works with -nv and may solve this bug. Please test Karmic-beta or newer and verify if it does.

I haven't seen this problem since upgrading to Jaunty Jackelope.

Thank you for reporting this issue about xserver-xorg-video-nv. Starting
with Lucid, Ubuntu is transitioning to using the -nouveau video driver
by default instead of -nv. The reason for this change is because
upstream development for the -nv driver has been quite slow. We are
quite pleased with the upstream development speed for -nouveau, and hope
this will translate into swifter bug fixes as well.

Because of this, I'm closing this bug report at this time. I'm marking
it wontfix because what you describe is probably a valid issue, but we
do not have further plans to work on it in Ubuntu. If you would still like
to see this issue investigated, I would encourage you to file it
upstream at http://bugs.freedesktop.org/.
