Bug Description

Hi
I am try to boot Intrepid LiveCD on computer with onboard Nvidia GeForce 6100 and it's difficult get to graphic mode.
Then I start normally or in safe mode I can see a screen divided in 2 parts: upper part is black there I sometime see a mouse cursor and down all in red color.

But If I go to the safe mode during the boot and after that press "CTRL" "ALT" "- " and after that "CTRL" "ALT" "+ " I see normal screen.

Here is ID of VGA onboard card:
00:0d.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation GeForce 6100 nForce 430 (rev a2)
00:0d.0 0300: 10de:03d0 (rev a2)

On Ubuntu 8.04 is working just fine before and after installing Nvidia proprietary drivers.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Could you please add your '/etc/X11/xorg.conf' file and your '/var/log/Xorg.0.log' file, when running the Live CD, as attachments to your bug report? Thanks in advance.

I'm also removing the regression-potential tag since the Live CD would use the nv driver and not the nvidia proprietary driver, so there is no clear indication that this is a regression from Hardy to Intrepid.

I'm not using the Live CD, but upgraded from Hardy to Intrepid. I cannot use any resolution > 800x600. The proprietary driver does not work:

(EE) Failed to initialize GLX extension (Compatible NVIDIA X driver not found)

so the nv-driver is used. X does not recognize my monitor and display comes up with 800x600. I cannot alter my settings anymore (someone thought it would be wise to delete displayconfig-gtk), so I'm kinda stuck.

Please see the attachments (xorg.conf, xorg.0.log) for more info.

I just found out that using the VESA driver, Xorg is able to show 1280x1024 without issues.

Seems like a nv issue. Would be nice if this could be fixed before release. If more input or debugging is needed, please contact me!

After installing Kubuntu 8.10 on hard disk with default driver I had no such problem, so this bug affect on my computer only Live CD/DVD.
Now is working fine on Ubuntu 8.10 after installing Nvidia proprietary drivers.

I reinstalled my computer using the final Intrepid CD. The nv-driver still only gave me 800x600. Installing the proprietary drivers did start X, however only the top two pixel-rows were used. The rest of the screen was black.

The fix for bug 385658 redoes how card detection works with -nv and may solve this bug. Please test Karmic-beta or newer and let us know whether it resolves the original issue.
