Bug Description

Booting the alpha4 desktop CD for amd64 without usplash ( bug 147623 )

After a few minutes I get a popup saying "Ubuntu is running in low-graphics mode". I click on [Configure]. Model is Plugandpray, resolution is set to 800x600 (the 1280x800 I might have selected at the boot time is ignored). There is no 1280x800 screen to select from, either.

Next I select the "Graphics Card" tab, and chose the GeForce Series 8 driver. Back to the "Screen" tab I can select the generic 1280x800 LCD panel now, select "Widescreen monitor", and click [OK] twice. After that I am left alone in text mode :-(.

Booting in safe graphics I just get 800x600 in vesa mode, AFAICS.

Please note that this laptop works fine with Unstable Debian, in text mode with vga=0x318, and using either the nv or the nvidia graphics driver for X. Kernel is 2.6.24-rc8 or newer.

Probably a duplicate of this bug:

Which should now be solved.

I tried the current (Feb.9th) Hardy DVD image. The problem is still there: No boot logo, after a long wait I can select only 800x600 in low graphics mode, etc. :-(

This bug did not have a package associated to it and had nothing to do with ubiquity (IMO) so I set the package to xserver-xorg-driver-nv.

Thanks for your bug report and for your contribution to ubuntu.
The missing usplash screen bug you are experiencing is bug 147623. It will always happens with usplash + nvidia geforce 8xxx + 64 bit. It is one high priority bug which ubuntu people aim to fix before hardy final release.

Concerning the issue with the bad resolution, I suggest you to search in launchpad to find duplicates since there is probably already some people that has the same problems that you (nvidia geforce 8xxx cards are pretty popular). I have a 8300GS card but this bug does not happen with that card. Thanks for the information you provided so far.

I tried xserver-xorg-video-nv_2.1.8-1tja1_amd64.deb: XWindow seemed to work in 1280x800 with the default configuration settings. Cool. I'm happy.

Switching back to text mode I got just a blinking cursor, but probably this is a problem of some weird text mode instead of using native console fonts. If I switch from one virtual console to another (without running X) I get the same effect.

Many thanx

Harri
