Bug Description

Binary package hint: xorg

I have upgraded my ubuntu from 6.10 to 7.04 using the Alternate CD .
Since then my desktop size is larger then my display so that the rightmost slice is not visible. As a consequence of that the Log off button is half hidden, and the rightmost part of all windows, when maximized, are not visible as they are outside the physical size of the video.
I tried some other screen resolutions besides the default one (1280x1024) but the problem remains.
My Netvista A22p is equipped with a NVIDIA GeForce2 MX w/TVout 32Mb SDRAM and my Video is a IBM L170p.

Thank you for your bug report.

Maurizio, could you attach the following files to this bug:
/etc/X11/xorg.conf
/var/log/Xorg.0.log
?

Setting to needsinfo pending reply from Maurizio.

Punting from xorg -> xserver-xorg-video-nv and setting back to unconfirmed. Not sure what to make of this one.

Maurizio:
If you are using an analogue cable (which it looks like you are) to connect to your monitor, have you checked that the missing portition doesn't become visible if you use your monitors auto adjust feature?

Hi
Thanks for the suggestion

After having setup automatically the image or manually the horizontal position of my L170p monitor, the screen is again perfect.

But I have one more problem that hinders my work.

I have a Windows XP as well installed on the same PC and I realized that if the screen is ok with Ubuntu the same is not on Windows and viceversa.

The peculiar thing is that before upgrading Ubuntu from 6.10 to 7.04 I didn't have any problem with the screen.

If it were of any help I could purchase a DVI cable and connect my monitor to the DVI port on the computer.

Any hint is welcome

Maurizio:
This is down to monitor probing techniques. The windows drivers (and in fact the linux nvidia binary drivers) probes for resolutions differently to the nv driver.

Using DVI will probably work around this because the monitor knows exactly where the picture starts and finishes so there's never any need to tune the picture size or centring.

I'll try the DVI cable and see what happens.
Thank you very much once again.

I encountered the same problem after upgrading from 6.10 to 7.04 using the Upgrade on Adept Manager. I tried tuning the monitor's own controls as you mentioned, but the total visible area stays the same and the visible area (although within my monitor's size), still doesn't show the full desktop screen. When I move my mouse to the far right, then the the screen scrolls over to the offscreen part.
My monitor can handle 1024x768, on which it is currently set, using mga driver for my Matrox Millenium II graphics card.

Marius:
Your issue is different. This sounds like X is being told to a virtual desktop size of 1024x768 but a "regular" size of 640x480. This often happens if you have a smaller mode before a larger one in your /etc/X11/xorg.conf . Whatever the cause, it is unrelated to this bug and I would recommend filing a new bug report and attaching your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file to it.
