Bug Description

Tested on : Edgy Eft, Fiesty Daily Build. System: nVidia 7800GT.

Both the Edgy and Fiesty LiveCDs, and also a fresh install of either hang as soon as the gnome splash screen appears. Corruption can be seen on the splash screen window itself.

In order to fix this in Edgy, the following steps were needed:

1. Hit f6 on the menu, delete quiet splash from the boot parameter line, and add single.

2. Once booted, edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf. Swap nv to vesa.

3. Run startx - Will now start perfectly, but obviously unaccelerated.

4. Install restricted modules, and nvidia glx.

5. Run nvidia-xconfig.

Restarting X, the system now works/boots/runs perfectly without corruption, in an accelerated environment.

Reporting this as a bug as according to the thread here (I am Bluedog) http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=330118 , this bug seems to be pretty common, especially with cards like mine.

Have been informed this is probably a problem with the Ubuntu hardware detection (Knoppix works fine), but it was expected to be fixed in Fiesty...

Also, both installer discs pass the disc check - My current ubuntu install came from the 6.10 disc and is just fine once I'd got the drivers changed.
