Bug Description

i have a new install of natty AMD64, on hp pavilion dv6406nr notebook.

what i tried to do:
---suspend the notebook eg. sudo pm-suspend.
what is expected:
---system suspend.
what happened instead:
---screen blanks for a split second, then shows a screen similar to the one you usually see when booting Ubuntu (the word ubuntu with red dots below). in the same time i hear two 'thud' noises from the speakers. then the system freezes, unable to revive it even with sysrq tools. must do cold reboot.

additional information:
---i was using ubuntu 10.10 i386 until now and didn't have the problem there. therefor this might be a regression, or might be caused by the AMD64 kernel.

i attached some logs from gnome log viewer:
syslog
pm-suspend.log

update: the problem doesn't exist in the mainline kernel.
i installed different versions (eg. 2.6.38.5, 2.6.37, and 2.6.35.6) of the kernel from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/, and in all of them i was able to suspend and resume flawlessly.

Could you test with the ubuntu kernel from natty-proposed, which now corresponds to stable 2.6.38.4 (see bug 769042)?
Since you tested with stable 2.6.38.5 (from the ubuntu mainline ppa) while the Natty release kernel corresponds to 2.6.38.2 the bug might already be fixed there.

2.6.38.5 has only just begun the SRU process (see bug 775809)

i have already tested that. problem exists also with natty-proposed
2.6.38-9.

Guess that means then that the fix came in with 2.6.38.5 stable or it really is in the difference between mainline and ubuntu kernels.
The 2.6.38.5 based ubuntu kernel should appear first in pre-proposed:
https://launchpad.net/~kernel-ppa/+archive/pre-proposed

i tried some stuff again, and it seems that what fixed the problem was not the different kernel but the nvidia driver i installed.
right now it seems the bug is related to Nouveau driver or to unity of both.
the weird thing though is that the bug repeated itself also after i stopped the x with 'service gdm stop'.

i am currently investigating more.

confirmed:
using nvidia driver, unity and ubnutu kernel (2.6.38-8) i can suspend, whereas if i switch to Nouveau driver and try to suspend, the system crashes.

affects: linux (Ubuntu) → xserver-xorg-video-nouveau (Ubuntu)
summary: - system freeze on suspend, natty, hp dv6
+ nouveau causing system freeze on suspend, natty, hp dv6

Thanks for finding that out.

There is a ppa for cutting edge graphics if you want to see whether the bug is already fixed in newer versions:
https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/ppa
Not sure though how much newer than the stock natty nouveau they currently are.

A method to unload the nouveau module:
http://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/KernelModeSetting#unload
It shouldn't freeze if it isn't loaded. Unless it freezes on unloading.

is this supposed to allow me to use nouveau driver without letting it interfere with suspend?
the instructions in the site you mentioned seem difficult and besides i dont have the option to install the nouveau driver in Jocky anyomre.
i think i'll stick to the nvidia driver for now.
(although i am suffering from another bug there too -https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/753144).

That' the idea. If you feel it's too difficult then don't do it. Those
were just suggestions for what you might try if you want to do more.

I just use the ~xorg-edgers/+archive/ppa and I still have the same problem (on natty).

just did a clean installation of 11.10, (this time 32 bit), which comes with nouveau driver as default.
when i try to suspend i get the splash screen you usually see when you boot ubuntu, and the system freezes dead.

in other words: problem exists also in new distribution only is is worse because you cant use the old 'nv' driver.

Hey izar00,

You filed this bug report against natty, but I see it's still open and
doesn't appear to have much activity recently. So, now that oneiric
is released and stable, this may be a good point for you to upgrade
and re-test if this issue is still present there.

If it's solved in the new release and you think it's worth backporting
the fix, please indicate that. Or if having the fix in the new release
is good enough, feel free to close out the bug (or let us know and we'll
close it.)

If it's not solved, leave the bug report open. I can't promise we'll
get to it (we get way more bugs filed than we can usually get to), but
your testing and feedback can help out if and when we do.

as i mentioned in the last post, the problem still occurs in oneiric.
the only workaround for me is to use the nvidia driver.

Please try the 12.04 alpha1 livecd, or newer. You should be able to suspend the live session.

We're closing this bug since there has not been a response from the original reporter. However, the issue still exists please feel free to reopen with the requested information. If you're not the original reporter, we'd prefer you file a new bug report.

Some tips:

  * Report X.org bugs via the command: `ubuntu-bug xorg`

  * Test against the latest development Ubuntu. http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/
Bugs marked as affecting the development version tend to get priority attention.

  * The `xdiagnose` utility has functionality for enabling debugging and
analyzing a few common X problems.

  * Tag your bugs with the Ubuntu versions you have reproduced the issue in.

  * See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Reporting for tips on writing good bug reports.
