Bug Description
Binary package hint: xserver-
Testing the external mini display-port on a MacBook Pro 7,1 with a NVIDIA GeForce 320M VGA controller. The external monitor is not recognized with using a mini display-port to VGA Apple adapter. Also, when starting System > Preferences > Monitors, the system freezes for a few seconds and then comes back. The same thing happens when clicking on "Detect Monitors".
Workaround: For external monitor to work, the nvidia binary driver needs to be installed (System > Administration > Additional Drivers).

I am experiencing the same behavior. To this excellent documentation I will only be able to add the observation that the system "pause" happens when running xrandr as well, and the proposed fix does not work for me on Kubuntu 10.10, as I am experiencing another, catastrophic bug using the binary driver (the whole video system crashes to blank screens after an indeterminate amount of time, requiring a reboot to clear. Possibly related to a few other bugs being reported re: Qt and the binary driver).
In short, as of right now there is no good way to attach an external monitor on my system (Macbook Pro 13", 7,1).
I am following this bug and will be happy to test proposed solutions.
