I am using nvidia-graphics-drivers-195.

ok, so I don't know, try with nouveau instead of a nv binary driver maybe to see if that's a driver issue

I have the same problem too. nvidia geforce2 MX400 card. Problem persists with both noveau and nvidia binary 96 driver. Reinstalling driver does not help. using the system by going through safe mode and booting into low graphics mode. this way it does not freeze, but poor screen resolution.

Please help.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We need some more information from you before we can start working on this bug.

Please run the following command which will attach necessary information:

apport-collect 566631

Bear in mind that you may need to install the python-launchpadlib package from the universe repository with 'sudo apt-get install python-launchpadlib'. Additionally, when prompted to give apport-collect permissions for Launchpad you will need to give it at least the ability to "Change Non-Private" data as it will be adding information to your bug report.

Btw, 4 months is a short period for low importance bugs. There's even a bug in nautilus that was fixed 10 years after its reporting (the fix will be available in Maverick).

Your Xorg.0.log shows that you are using a) Lucid with a non-default kernel or b) Maverick. Option a goes unsupported, b is ok if if you run the apport-collect command again. Please go back to Lucid's default kernel or run the apport-collect command again. In addition, please attach /var/log/gdm/:0.log and /var/log/gdm/:0-greeter.log but feel free to replace any private data with * or something similar. You might need admin privilegies to access gdm's log folder. I'm asking this because your xserver shows only 2 errors which doesn't seem to be critical.

Your logs show that your xserver is crashing but your kernel is still not lucid default. I'll close this bug if you can't
a) prove that the 64bit lucid has a different default kernel than lucid_i386
b) move back to lucid's default kernel
c)upgrade to maverick (still under developement)

Likely this bug is something in the linux kernel's nouveau drm driver. If that's true, then booting a newer version of the kernel might resolve it. Has anyone tested if this issue still exists with Lucid 10.04.4?

As we're on the cusp of the next LTS release, it would be worth testing if this issue exists in the 12.04 beta. This can be checked using a USB live image. You can get it at http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily/current/, and use USB Disk Creator to make a boot drive. Please update this bug report once you've tested. (If you've already tested any version of ubuntu newer than Lucid and already know it works, that's sufficient testing, just mention that here.)

We're closing this bug since there has not been a response from the original reporter. However, the issue still exists please feel free to reopen with the requested information. If you're not the original reporter, we'd prefer you file a new bug report.

Some tips:

  * Report X.org bugs via the command: `ubuntu-bug xorg`

  * Test against the latest development Ubuntu. http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/
Bugs marked as affecting the development version tend to get priority attention.

  * The `xdiagnose` utility has functionality for enabling debugging and
analyzing a few common X problems.

  * Tag your bugs with the Ubuntu versions you have reproduced the issue in.

  * See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Reporting for tips on writing good bug reports.
