Bug Description

A Dell Inspiron 660 without nVidia graphics works fine.

The same machine with an nVidia card lags and jerks when dragging a window or scrolling a browser page.

Most annoying.

I do not have any proprietary drivers and would like to keep things that way.

I applied the suggested update to the Vivid enablement stack as outlined in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/LTSEnablementStack

The resulting video behaviour is not 100% but very much better.

I got some errors during the update process and captured them as best I could via the attached 3 screenshots.

Hope this helps.

I tested with the 64 bit liveDVD 15.10 Wily Werewolf test version of 24-sep-2015.

I observed the following:
- white (or grey) text at top of screen during boot (Linux message) was maybe larger than usual
- the Ubuntu splash screen with 5 red dots was visible (at last!)
- the cursor is not sluggish like 14.04 32 bit with nVidia card
- the cursor is very fast and responsive just like the test machine without nVidia card using 14.04 or 15.04 32 bit
- dragging windows around the desktop very rapidly on the nVidia machine behaves just like the test machine without nVidia

In summary, the 64 bit liveDVD on the nVidia machine behaves just like the 32 bit 14.04 and 15.04 on the test machine without nVidia.

Bravo.

peterzay, the issue you are reporting is an upstream one. Could you please report this problem through the appropriate channel by following the instructions verbatim at http://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/Bugs/ ?

Please provide a direct URL to your bug report once you have made it so that it may be tracked.

Thank you for your understanding.

I surmise that Ubuntu has an outsourcing relationship with them.

As an end user, it is not for me to deal with all your third parties.

May I suggest you deal directly with them?

Thanks.

nouveau is the open source graphics driver for nvidia cards.

>"I surmise that Ubuntu has an outsourcing relationship with them."

It's a community relationship of upstream (nouveau developers) and downstream (Ubuntu developers).

>"As an end user, it is not for me to deal with all your third parties."

Actually, as you are the original reporter and have the hardware, you are the best person to report a bug to upstream, as it directly impacts you.

>"May I suggest you deal directly with them? Thanks."

Unfortunately, as I don't have the hardware, I'm not able to do as requested of you in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-nouveau/+bug/1313158/comments/37 . Frankly, I'm not sure why you haven't done it already as it's easier to do then all the other stuff you've already done.

Did you destabilize my system with the suggested update to the Vivid enablement stack as outlined in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/LTSEnablementStack ?

As one would notice reading in its entirety https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-nouveau/+bug/1313158/comments/37 you need to file a report on nouveau's bug tracker (which is not Launchpad).

>"Did you destabilize my system with the suggested update to the Vivid enablement stack as outlined in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/LTSEnablementStack ?"

Is this a serious question?

peterzay (peterzay) wrote :

Let us recap.

I update to the Vivid enablement stack and get the error in comment 34.

The next day, during a system update, I get the same error (comment 43).

These errors are new to this install of 14.04.

The update process pushes not 1 but 2 Linux kernels (comment 43). Each has substantial info (many dozens of MB).

These are not the hallmarks of a stable OS.

What part of the above do you not take seriously?

Actually, 14.04 has been unstable for months. I keep getting system program errors as in comment 32. I always report them even though many are repetitive.

peterzay, first, let me clarify a few things here. When you ask a ridiculous question about if I destabilized your system, then unnecessarily repeat details everyone has already seen by reading the bug report, and top it off with continuing the same accusatory and rude questioning by asking:
"What part of the above do you not take seriously?"

it doesn't make anyone interested in your problem, let alone motivate them to fix it. So I would recommend you fix the attitude.

Second, if you still haven't reported this upstream as previously advised, you are reducing your chances of having this be fixed as soon as possible.

This problem was reported on 2014-04-26 and you began work on 2015-09-26.

That is 518 days or 1 year and 5 months later.

So, I would recommend you fix your work ethic if you want to be taken seriously.

penalvch (penalvch) wrote :

peterzay, oh wow. You have a severe misunderstanding on how things work here.

First, I'm a volunteer triager. So, my work is scoped to that. As this report is fully triaged, the scope of my work has already ended, and where an upstream developer begins. However, that won't happen as I already told you over and over until you report it upstream.

Second, I didn't even know your bug existed until the day I started working on it when I was scanning through past reports.

Third, your continuing to not only be rude to a volunteer, but continuing to not follow the clear and simple instructions advised to you multiple times previously comes off as someone who is not serious in getting their problem fixed.

The bottom line is that the issue here isn't my work ethic to triage on a volunteer basis. If one would care to do the tiniest amount of research in such an accusation, one would find evidence to undermine it at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+topcontributors . The issues are your hostile and negative attitude (which I still don't understand why one would think this is a good idea), and doing what was already requested of you on numerous occasions to get this under the eyes of upstream developers (I also don't understand the delay on this). Hopefully as a final reference, the information necessary to report this upstream is contained in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-nouveau/+bug/1313158/comments/37 .

If there is something that is unclear about reporting upstream, then asking questions here in Launchpad to clear it up is perfectly fine. However, what is _not_ ok is the continued rudeness. For more on this, please carefully review the Bug Reporting Etiquette section of https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs .
