on closing the system settings window... ubuntu crashes and screen goes... pixellated

Thank you for your bug report, that doesn't seem an gnome-control-center issue. Does it happen every time? What video driver do you use? Could you add your Xorg.0.log(.old) to the bug report and you dmesg/syslog after getting the issue?

It seems like a nouveau issue, could you try if you get the same problems if you use the nvidia binary drivers? (you can active those from software-properties-gtk -> drivers tab)
