Bug Description

My computer freezes happens not just using Systems Settings, but also at seemingly unknown times. Usually some sort of graphics usage. Also using the Dash at times.Clicking on the "X" to exit System Settings, the computer froze. No response whatsoever. A power cycle was needed. This happens using NOUVEAU driver only.

WORKAROUND: Install NVIDIA driver.

How can we prove nouveau or something else?

I also have a freezing problem with Ubuntu 13.10

Here is what I posted this morning in the "General" forum:

Hello, my system randomly freezes when I login with the Ubuntu (default) desktop but does not when I use the Gnome flashback (no effects) desktop. I haven't login using the regular Gnome flashback desktop.
The freezes happen doing simple things.
It did also happen with Ubuntu 13.04
I have an Nvidia GeForce GT 240 (GT 215) video card
I did a system test and what got tested passed
Memory 7.8 GiB
Processor Intel Pentium(R) D CPU 3.20GHz x 2

Short story: About four days ago I installed the Nvidia-current display driver and removed the Nouveau display driver and my system has not frozen

Long story: To remove the “Nouveau display driver” first install the “Nvidia-Current” display driver.
I ran into trouble because I removed the Nouveau -specific kernel DRM services -runtime and the “system settings” stopped working. Then I ran into more trouble because I removed the Nouveau display driver before installing the Nvidia-Current. Somehow I was able to go to a shell and installed the Nvidia-current driver with sudo apt-get -install nvidia-current (or something like that). That made the graphics work but still the “system settings” did not work. I reinstalled the Nouveau -specific kernel DRM services -runtime and the “system settings' still did not work. I found out that I needed to install or reinstall de Gnome-Control-Center and I did using “sudo apt-get -reinstall gnome-control-center” or “sudo apt-get -install gnome-control-center”. Since I kept uninstalling and reinstalling the “runtime”, the “reinstall” worked at one point but then it didn't so I finally used the “install”. My system has been working fine since then and has not frozen, but I'm not using the Nouveau Display Driver

and nvidia-drivers binary don't work for me too. Monitor is flickering (binary drivers) after boot and freezing too.

and this (/etc/modprobe.d/options) didn't help me. But this line worked for me on Gentoo.
options nvidia NVreg_DeviceFileMode=432 NVreg_DeviceFileUID=0 NVreg_DeviceFileGID=27 NVreg_ModifyDeviceFiles=1 NVreg_RegistryDwords="PerfLevelSrc=0x2222"

My graphics is GeForce 9650M GT, 1GB.

Nvidia drivers binary and nouveau are unstable for me. It's blocking for me. I can't use my laptop in the production environment :(

Does anybody have an idea, how to resolve it? - quick solution?

First I needed to install:

The apport finished without incident. I needed to boot using "nomodeset" , otherwise the screen would freeze

I don't have IOMMU in my BIOS, but according to this link:

I added it to my linux string.

Also, the freeze happens not just using Systems Settings, but also at unknow times. Usually some sort of graphics usage. Also using the Dash at times will freeze.

penalvch,

I just tried using the added IOMMU to my linux string as per the link above:
"iommu=soft swiotlb=131072"

Of course with "nomodeset" it never fails. I then remove "nomodeset" but kept "iommu=soft swiotlb=131072", and it never fails ( or hasn't yet).

Apparently newer boards have the IOMMU on the BIOS, my Narra6 does not.

Can the current nouveau compensate for the lack of no hardware IOMMU?

What exactly does this prove?

Test it out for a few days. If you don't have any more crashes, at least you have a WORKAROUND. If it continues to crash, please capture the xorg backtrace and/or kernel call trace via https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DebuggingSystemCrash .

It started crashing again. Both using gnome-control-center & Dash.
I researched the IOMMU=soft, and that hack is iffy at best. As described here:
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=168555

Using nvidia drivers doesn't freeze, but the user experience is choppy or sluggish.
I don't have a second computer setup so the ssh option in the DebuggingSystemCrash is not a viable solution.

This problem will very well be nvidia or nouveau issue. This problem of freezing has been around after ubuntu 12.04.
