Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.12 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

This may be a problem with nouveau rather than the kernel itself. Sometimes I get a strange coloured screen, only mouse pointer visible, but menu items are selectable - There is no text readable for only white boxes show up with selectable areas. They react and behave as expected (when the guesses are right wich item is actually selected)

Unfortunately it does not change anything. I tested with 13.10 live and get the same behaviour. The output of dmidecode is as
follows:

1708
04/10/2013

When going to standby from within logged in user session when waking up I get a blank dark screen with nothing although I can change to console (tty1-6). When going to standby from login screen of lightdm I get some chaos: colourful patterned screen, mousepointer is visible, I can select the menu in the upper right corner but it is a mere white box drawing orange rectangles when the pointer is hovering over menuitems. I can select them getting a white box again. With <enter> I can select the default. Switching to console is possible here too. But here (when going to standby from lightdm) I get repeating output on all consoles (tty1-6):

[nouveau E[ PGRAPH][0000:01:00.0]
[nouveau E[ PGRAPH][0000:01:00.0] SHADER 0xa004021e TRAP ch2 [0x003f6ff000 xorg[1108]]

(there may be some transcription-errors for it failed to log the output via script or something)

Thank you for taking the time!
Karl

Zwylicht, did this problem not occur in a release prior to Saucy?

Well: I uninstalled nvidia-current while testing 13.10 beta for it was broken with my system and stuck with nouveau. Regarding standby Live 12.04 is not working as well as 13.10. I installed nvidia-current now and standby is working again. So this is fairly probably an issue with nouveau. -- What now?

I'd like to use the open source driver. Is it wrong to change the bug to nouveau then?

Zwylicht, could you please confirm this issue exists with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ . If the issue remains, could you please just make a comment to this?

Sorry for being mistakable!

I tested nouveau and the bug still exists. I tested nouveau because nvidia works well so I did not test that.

Zwylicht , thank you for performing the requested test. Could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu so the latest X.Org stack with nouveau and kernel may be tested? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p xserver-xorg-video-nouveau REPLACE-WITH-BUG-NUMBER

Thank you for your understanding.

I will perform the test after a reset and reckon will run the command demanded.
