Laptop with Nvidia GPU is hot while using xserver-xorg-video-nouveau driver

Under all versions of Ubuntu (12.04+) it is hot, while using xserver-xorg-video-nouveau driver.

Currently nouveau does no power management, meaning that
* voltage control
* clock control
* clock gating
* ASPM

are all running on default (set by bios) settings. It's has been worked on for a while now and there is still more work needed

This is not the appropriate forum to track "power management not supported" issues. This is something that's being worked on, when it's supported, should it not work, feel free to file bugs then.

Do you really understand that Nvidia-based 1500-3000$ laptop may be really killed by overheat with pretty non-binary / no-blob / GPL-friendly opensource driver? Are you kidding? :)

It seems Linus Torvalds was right about Nvidia and their (Optimus) hardware.

There is not much of a benefit in (re-)posting "power management does not work", most people are aware about this and working on it one way or the other. If you really want to help, be more understanding and work with the nouveau team rather than posting annoying replies.

Btw have you realised the _massive_ amount of work that PM is ? The AMD/ATI DPM code that landed in linux 3.11 is over 50kloc and all of it was done by the vendor.

I really understand. But no amount of understanding will make it a good idea to file bugs about it. [Also note that most CPU/GPU chips have overheat protection.]

I would recommend sitting tight and waiting for this functionality to be released. The Nouveau project's devs are well aware of the lack of power management support. You can also come to #nouveau and see if some devs are willing to share their reclocking scripts with you, although it's more than likely that the answer will be "no" or that they won't work at all for you.
