Bug Description

Hi

This laptop is having serious problems with Nvidia graphic which makes ACPI completely unusable.

I have tried bot 32 and 64 release of both 12.04, 13.04 and 13.10 Aplha - all behave the same: any ACPI related operation hangs system. Those operations include:
plugging in / removing power supply (every time)
switching of display (after screen inactivity or when closing lid)
While booting with “acpi=off” none of mentioned operations hang computer, but resolution is lower from nominal making it difficult to work on.

While PC is in this “hang” state, you can move mouse, but can not click / select anything. Keyboard also doesn't work, so you can not switch to TTY console or send REISUB

Luckily I have tried nightly builds 3.10.0-999-generic kernel and it works fine with it.

So this ticket is just to acknowledge this problem and hopefully help any other Linux users who tried to install Ubuntu on Toshiba Tecra M9.

I have also tried to run Mint Debian edition on this laptop and it runs fine without any tuning.

I went back to disabling acpi, as only feasible option to use this laptop.

with either nvidia drivers or development kernel, it kind of works (laptop doesn't crash when power supply is unplugged) but closing laptop lid (even with suspend disabled) is crashing laptop.

Suspend doesn't work in any of combination I have tried.

In addition with nvidia prioprietary drivers X11 is crashing on startup, so automatic login doesn't work.

Dariusz Panasiuk, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p xserver-xorg-video-nouveau REPLACE-WITH-BUG-NUMBER

Please note, given that the information from the prior release is already available, doing this on a release prior to the development one would not be helpful.

Thank you for your understanding.

I have run apport-connect as requested.
Laptop still cannot suspend, and freezes when tryng to change brigteness of LCD screen. It is however bit better as it doesn't freeze when plugging in power supply.
Problematic element is definitelly graphic card Nvidia "Gallium 0.4 on NV86".
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation G86M [Quadro NVS 130M] (rev a1) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])

There is different release of the same laptop with different Nvidia card which works fine, without any issues.

This would be a different problem, not covered under the scope of this report. You are welcome to file a new bug about this via a terminal:
ubuntu-bug linux

>"freezes when tryng to change brigteness of LCD screen."

As per http://www.toshiba.co.uk/innovation/download_bios.jsp?service=UK an update to your BIOS is available (2.00). If you update to this following https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BiosUpdate does it change anything? If it doesn't, could you please both specify what happened, and provide the output of the following terminal command:
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

Please note your current BIOS is already in the Bug Description, so posting this on the old BIOS would not be helpful.

For more on BIOS updates and linux, please see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Bug_reporting_etiquette .

Thank you for your understanding.

With this OS laptop can change brightness and suspend. It still doesn't resume properly though. Sscreen is unusable but TTY works fine so it is possible to restart GDM.
