Bug Description

Kubuntu 18.04.5 QA-test on daily on
hp dx6120mt (mini-tower, pentium 4, 3gb, winfast clone of nvidia 7600gt)

This issue is video related I believe (filed in a hurry soI could move to next test), and won't impact 18.04.5 release - so I'm just recording for purposes so I can move to next test.. as I type this, the diagonal images are static, however as the cursor moves to the next 'line' in the browser page, the effects change briefly..

it's flashing on major changes of display image, and would be difficult to use, possibly risky if user is prone to seizures...

guiverc@dx6120-MT-PL926AV:~$ sudo lshw -C video

reboot, greeter has a weird wrong-looking-logo/image above username but I'll ignore it

logged in and weird graphics on background... nvidia issues I bet..

install looks good ...but issues with video, weird strobe/flashing effect as detail on screen is re-drawn.. I'll file bug for records

I've take some photos .. will upload to bug report later..

I logged out & this time I have a KDE logo in the image / above my username! I had no idea that was the image last time (it was so corrupted, and blue wasn't a color in it pre-login)

I've ~changed package to
xserver-xorg-video-nouveau-hwe-18.04 as it's a video issue.

Changed in kubuntu-meta (Ubuntu):

I'm going to use this for a like issue on amd64/hirsute

QA-test (Kubuntu HIRSUTE daily) on

dell [optiplex] 990 (i7-2600, 16gb, nvidia geforce gt 6600 gt)
(exploring sddm & video issue primarily, using hirsute for comparison)

session is horrid; graphic glitches are a PAIN. mainly black triangular shapes that appear to flash/move as I do anything (esp. move mouse-pointer)..

I couldn't use this box with this issue; quickly giving me a headache with all the flashing (and making me feel queezy)

Pictures match the photos of the other box once logged in.
I logged out to test SDDM/glitches (that are occurring on this box), and I'll provide a picture of what SDDM looked like (thankfully few flashes at sddm, though it flashed briefly when left idle when the password entry dialog disappeared, or was made to re-appear)
