This problem will occur with kernel version 3.1 or higher on my 2730p.

For the 2730p, this seems to have been fixed, according to https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=43123.
The patch mentioned there also solves another video issue, see https://bugs.launchpad.net/gentoo/+bug/796030.

Please test the kernel in the proposed repository.
