I have the same problem on a Toshiba Portege M400. Same version of Natty (i386), same graphics (Intel 945). My screen resolution is 1400x1050. If I toggle it down to 1024x768, it rotates okay. But if I leave it at the native resolution, I get the black bar at the top of the screen.

I have a ThinkPad X220T (convertible tablet) which has Intel graphics as well. I have the same issue when I rotate using xrandr manually, or with the screen resolution applet. The area of screen which is "blank" is still usable by the dock and menubar, but does not seem to have rotated properly. See the attached screenshots. landscape and portrait show the problem (similar to the OP), and normal and "borken" show the Ubuntu "dash" (or whatever it is called). As you can see, it fills the screen (1366x768 on this machine) in landscape, but appears to still be "1366x768 when rotated.

Hi all, the fact that the dash appeared in the "blank" area made me think it could be a higher-level interface issue, so I tried logging in in "Classic mode" -- and in that mode xrandr works well -- I do not have this issue in classic mode. So I guess this is probably a bug with Unity -- at least for my hardware. Would one of you portege folks try logging in with classic mode and see if it solves your problem, too?

I can confirm that Unity from natty-proposed solved my problem.

Hey thomas-ibbotson,

You filed this bug report against natty, but I see it's still open and
doesn't appear to have much activity recently. So, now that oneiric
is released and stable, this may be a good point for you to upgrade
and re-test if this issue is still present there.

If it's solved in the new release and you think it's worth backporting
the fix, please indicate that. Or if having the fix in the new release
is good enough, feel free to close out the bug (or let us know and we'll
close it.)

If it's not solved, leave the bug report open. I can't promise we'll
get to it (we get way more bugs filed than we can usually get to), but
your testing and feedback can help out if and when we do.
