Sudden video crash on intel chipset

Some programs like update-manager cause xorg to crash, the screen turns to scattered graphics like a video encryption. In this state there is no way but reboot to exit. Restarting gdm did not help, the screen is refreshed but freezed and unusable theirafter.
I found some uxa error lines in the Xorg.0.log, something crashed away and stay in this state till reboot. This problem did not exist in 10.10.

The crash effect is variable, can be an endless loop with screen refresh, refresh, refresh. I add a video and a captured log with the rotating lines.

Possible dupe with #344856 , the description sounds very similar. I got these crashed if a root window appears on the user xorg screen like his 2009 problem. But this bug was never a problem with 10.10 here.

Actually this isn't really an X bug, although it looks like it from the symptoms.

What's really going on is some other process on your system is consuming all the video memory (perhaps by polling the xserver with redraw requests or something). Eventually the video memory is exhausted, and that prevents X from running. The error messages you show are really typical for this type of scenario. Try identifying what client app is going rogue and causing the X server to die.

The i915 is an uma architecture, i seen this bug for now only with update-manager when the progress indicator is running. Maybe the called programm draws to much or the x server did not claim more shared memory to allow this drawing. Switching to exa and give fixed 128mb memory can fix this. But unity is going very sluggish then.

I have the same problem. I really can't use my computer for more than 5 minutes!
As CPU hangs, the screen freezes and becomes full of noise, garbage, etc.
Only the mouse works!

you'll see how many people (mostly on ArchLinux) have the same bug!

I think I am having this same issue. Reported it here https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/779163 Its totally random but occurs when I either on a video call with skype or watching video with vlc. I don't know if it helps but the first time I got this issue was when I used kernel 2.6.38 on ubuntu 10.10 (which shipped with the kernel 2.6.35) so it might be a kernel issue? also a friend who runs gentoo confirmed to me he is running same issues and he too is on 2.6.38.
