To clarify, you got a popup about this crash, but never saw any X session termination or freeze up?

Unfortunately apport didn't capture a valid GPU dump in this case, looks like the GPU got reset before the reporting kicked in perhaps. But from the logs it looks like compiz crashed (twice!), and then the GPU hung, then led to X crashing.

Changed in xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu):
status: New → Incomplete

Yep got a pop up, reported it ok, then tried working through a few
things and then X locked up completely after trying to access the menu
under the ubuntu symbol.

I've since updated to latest and currently have non functional X on
normal startup, have to go back to low resolution or command line to run
the currently version of Natty - as of last night

Regards Brian

Hmm, ok well perhaps this freeze was some permutation on one of the other reported gpu freezes, such as bug #702090. Since we don't have a good dump in this case I'm going to close the bug report out.

With your update to latest, have you reported that bug? If not, please do. Does it work better if booting an older kernel such as -rc2?

I'm on Maverick but running a bunch of updated packages to get this Sandy Bridge box running properly. I need to update to Natty; will probably do in two weeks' time.
