[arrandale] When i upgraded to 10.10 the screen on my laptop(Gateway nv79) went completely black and I could not see anything unless I held a flashlight to the screen to see. The only way I am able to fix this is issue is by doing a system test. But as soon as my laptop goes to sleep it goes back to the black screen. I could not find another fix because once I did the system testing for 10.10 it would not allow me to do the testing again to fix it.

Bug Description

Binary package hint: xorg

My laptop screen is black until I run system check which is a temporary fix because when my laptop goes to sleep it goes back to black. I can only see things when I hold a flashlight to it.

I have the same problem upgrading from 10.04 to 10.10 on my Gateway NV79. Booting with kernel 2.6.35-24 has this problem. Booting with 2.6.32.27 (the previous kernel for 10.04?) at least gets me back to a working display.

Here's a description of when the issue occurs during booting:
At first, for a while, a single "_" appears in the upper left of display. Then a single line status message appears very briefly (less than 1 second) and it is difficult to recall what it says .. something about intel and 0.0.0.0.

Then when the display goes black with an audible sound of a switch clicking .. same sound occurs during normal boot when it precedes the display showing a full xserver service occuring. I suspect that either the display chip has been turned off or (more likely) the display itself has been turned off (or just the backlight?).

I cannot figure out any other settings that I can adjust. Please advise a work-around or patch this quickly. Thanks!

weird but effective workaround: Do this in a working displayable kernel (for me: 2.6.32-27):
system > preferences > power management
"On AC Power" tab; "DISPLAY" section: "set display brightness to:" change from 100% to 85%.
then reboot to kernel 2.6.35-24 .. and the backlight is on and everything displays great!

BTW: I was referencing http://forums.opensuse.org/english/get-help-here/install-boot-login/449999-black-screen-boot-surprise.html thread thinking that it is a power management issue.

further update on that work-around: works as long as laptop doesn't become suspend or idle .. (or closing the lid). after that, reverts back to backlight off when linux is restored. can't figure out a way around that one (sigh).

Latest kernel update to 2.6.35-27 still has same issue .. is anyone seeing this issue? Four kernel upgrades have occurred since the NV79 Backlight power off issue has been logged? Is this the wrong forum for these issues?? I would like to use the later kernels but cannot because the LIGHTS ARE OFF on the display. It worked on kernel 2.6.32.27 .. so it has got to be something simple that was changed.

(seems like i'm just talking to myself...) Tried hooking up external monitor and booting from kernel 2.6.35-27 .. worked fine. laptop display shows, external monitor display shows. close lid, suspend, open lid, resume, everything still fine. BUT .. remove the external monitor (while still booted): laptop displays great. but then close lid -> suspend; open lid -> resume, and backlight briefly on but then gets turned off (display barely visible with bright flashlight). Hook up external monitor again, click System>preferences>monitors, and voila, display's backlight is turned on while mirroring displays with external monitor. This should be a very very easy fix .. could some one fix it please???

I also have the same problem, i need to hook up an external monitor when i boot my laptop, I own nv79 with an intel i5 intel 4 ram, iIalso read this bug description but it doesn't apply to my bug, https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/702090. i also read this other discussion https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/705949 and install the ppa but it doesnt affect the result, i also tried the work around going to system /power management/ display reducing from 100 percent to 85, but it also didnt work, i also check this other tread https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/685727 but i couldnt find a solution there. I also have the kernel 2.6.35-27 it work fine,, the only problem is the backligth. sorry for my crappy english Im Mexican

Hey jazz41408,

Thanks for your interest in Ubuntu.

Thanks for testing maverick during its development period. Unfortunately it looks like this bug report didn't get attention during the maverick development period. But I see there's not been more comments on the bug since the release, which makes me wonder if this is still an issue for you?

If you've not seen this issue since maverick's release yourself, it may have been solved by kernel or X or other updates that occurred late in the release; if so, would you mind please closing the bug for us? Go to the URL mentioned in this bug report, click the yellow icon(s) in the status column and set to 'Fix Released'.

If you no longer have the hardware needed to reproduce the problem, or otherwise feel the bug no longer needs tracked in Launchpad, you can set the status to 'Invalid'.

If you are the original reporter and still have this issue, just reply to this email saying so. (Or set the bug status to Confirmed.) If you are able to re-test this against 11.04 Natty Narwhal (our current development focus) and find the issue still affects Natty, please also run 'apport-collect <bug-number>' while running natty, which will add fresh logs and debug data, and flag it for the Ubuntu-X development team to look at.

Hi, thank you for your follow up. When you say "close it" do you mean
that a solution, work-around, or bug fix exists? Please tell me where to
find that solution/fix, because I have been unsuccessful with all
Maverick 10.10 upgrades and the latest Natty 11.04. I would very much
like to upgrade my laptop from Lucid 10.04, but this backlight turned
off issue is preventing me from doing that.
Thank you for your assistance,
