Bug Description

Binary package hint: xorg

Twice since upgrading to Kubuntu Lucid four weeks ago I have had the system crash, taking my current work with it. Both times my system had been running for two days. Based on my usage, I expect that I was running low on RAM, but had lots of swap. Xorg hadn't crashed on me in years until I upgraded to Lucid. I have attached the system profile pulled by apport. I inspected all the logs on my system both times and didn't see much relevant to the crash. I have included the relevant excerpts below.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
Xorg.log says:

(WW) intel(0): i830_uxa_prepare_access: bo map failed
<snip lots of repeat>
(WW) intel(0): i830_uxa_prepare_access: bo map failed

    Fatal server error:

Kdm.log says:

I don't know how it could be related, but the only commonality I can think of between the two crashes is that they were both shortly after receiving a Kopete message that I did not view, so the notification was sitting in the panel.

affects: xorg (Ubuntu) → xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu)

I get this as well, Toshiba U300 (Intel GM965), and I also think it's got something to do with Kopete, as that's what seems to do it here as well. I have also noticed that Kopete's animation in the system tray often "freezes" instead of animating until I click on it.

Could you please try the current mainline kernel [1] and see if this fixes it? Download the *_all.deb headers file, the linux-headers for amd64 and the linux-image for amd64. And then install them in that order (just double-click them).

I had the same problem in lucid. Looks to be a video driver issue though. Tried updating to the xserver-xorg-video-intel driver from the x-updates PPA and after doing this I haven't had any crashes happen on me.

Oh well, it crashed a few times anyway. At least it seems more stable with the newer driver, but far from perfect.

Tried upgrading to the mainline kernel as pointed out in comment #4, but I still have crashes happening.

Andreas,

Could you please file a new bug report by typing 'ubuntu-bug xserver-xorg-video-intel' immediately after a crash? (There's a one-report-per-person policy with graphics bugs, since they're all so similar. Mention this report in yours though in case they do end up being duplicates). Thank you.

I have the same problem on Radeon 9550. But it's working fine on Kernel 2.6.21. On any other newer kernel it hans after few hours or sometimes even minutes. There was no such a problem on Karmic.

I experience this bug with a Thinkpad T400 (Intel GMA 4500MHD, i.e. GM45 chip) under Kubuntu (lucid). Is it possible that this bug is somewhat related to KDE? Which KDE Version are you running? At least for my system it seems that this bug only occured in the RC versions of KDE SC 4.5, which have (or now: had) problems with Intel graphic cards, see: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=243181 .
I'll check if it still occurs with the upcoming 4.5 final release, try out mainline kernel and latest xorg-driver if it does, and report back my results.
