Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

This happened after upgrading my system from karmic to lucid.

I can't use my external monitor at full resolution (1920x1080) the maximal available resolution is 800x600 :-S.

kedz@kedz:~$ xrandr
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 2240 x 900, maximum 8192 x 8192

but, in xorg log i can see my monitor proper resultion:
(II) intel(0): Modeline "1920x1080"x0.0 148.50 1920 2008 2052 2200 1080 1084 1089 1125 +hsync -vsync (67.5 kHz)
and there is a weird message:
(II) intel(0): Not using default mode "1920x1080" (monitor doesn't support reduced blanking)
What is this? can't i force somehow to use this mode?

Btw, i tried an another monitor, (its an older LCD panel, and i can use its maximal resolution 1680x1050)....
And the weird thing is everything worked fine before update to lucid...

When i booting up my machine with connected external monitor, it is not usable too, monitor says "invalid hsync value" :-S
(i use encrypted rootfs i havent tried the booting without splash... i'll try it...)

I'm not sure about whether its a xserver-xorg-video-intel problem, maybe it is some DRM/kernel related issue...

Thank you for reporting this bug. In order to avoid a possible source of confusion and errors, could you move away the files /etc/X11/xorg.conf and ~/monitors.xml and try again? Then upload the output of `xrandr --verbose` and /var/log/Xorg.0.log as separate attachments (not comments) here.

An another observation:

Without xorg.conf and ~/.config/monitors.xml my monitor saying:
DSUB
OUT OF RANGE
53.5kHz / 85 Hz

(i haven't set any resolution...etc)

PS.: this message started to appear on my external monitor when the system asked for my encrypted root partition password... (at boot time...)

Today i found a workaround to get my external monitor working.
When I plug-in my monitor only after bootup (when my Gnome session is active),
the Display Preferences can properly recognize my monitor,
and i can use it at full resolution (1920x1080). :-D

Please let me know if You need any logs...

The 2.6.33 kernel available at http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/ may help you. From the changelog:

Hm... i checked with the 2.6.33 (non rc) kernel...

Not solved my problem, but the result is a bit better,
now i can't see the "OUT OF RANGE" message on my external screen while my ubuntu booting,
but now i can set only "1024x768" as maximum resolution....

And seems the frequency detection a bit better (with the current [ubuntu] kernel 2.6.32.14 its sets to 800x600@85Hz by default), now my monitor working in proper frequency... but i still can't use it at maximal resolution....
(except if i plug-in my monitor after boot-up...)

I'll try to check the logs.... (maybe i'll find some useful...)
(I attached my Xorg.log with 2.6.33 kernel...)

[This is an automatic notification.]

Thanks for reporting this bug to help making the Intel graphics driver
better. We hear from upstream that a number of bugs (possibly including
this one) have been fixed in the newer DRM code from the 2.6.33 kernel.
I don't know if your bug is one of the ones fixed in this release,
though, but we've prepared a PPA with this DRM update. Would you mind
installing this, rebooting, and testing if the original issue can be
reproduced with it or not?

The DRM PPA is here:

    https://edge.launchpad.net/~apw/+archive/red

Note there could be new bugs... please file these as new reports using
the command 'ubuntu-bug linux' (for kernel or DRM or KMS bugs) or
'ubuntu-bug xorg' if you suspect them to be X.org issues.

Hi, i tried the DRM PPA
(uname -a:
 Linux kedz 2.6.32-16-generic #23~drm33v5-Ubuntu SMP Thu Mar 4 17:21:31 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux)
but the result is the same as in comment #8

So now 1024x768 is the maximum available resolution :-S
(i've attached the xrandr --verbose, the dmesg, and the Xorg.log with this kernel..)

I think I may have found another workaround. If possible, try doing it the old-school way - add/update monitor and screen sections in your xorg.conf based on the mode info in your xorg.log, similar to comment 17 in the fdo bug at http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=17255
This is similar to what is described on the Ubuntu Troubleshooting Resolution Problems wiki at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/Resolution

You may also need the 2.6.33 kernel (or it's DRM as mentioned by Bryce in comment 10) to get around the (II) intel(0): Not using default mode "1920x1080" (monitor doesn't support reduced blanking) error.
